apologies if this is an inappropriate question...but this seemed like the group that could help!

REALLY want a MAPLE neck lakland 55-XX string...
REALLY want a seafoam green/tortoise guard lakland bass...

(preparing for the punch to the face)

Does a guy save up for the 55-94 (3300+) in the color he wants, or instead get a used 55-02 with a maple neck and send the body off to get refinished? I've played 1 or 2 USA lakland basses at guitar shops, and the fit/finish was pretty phenominal. At the same time, the 44-02 I have has a stupid nice neck and is wicked light too...

I don't want to sound TOO cheap or like a cheater, but the "MRS" frowns less at a used+refin cost than she frowns at a new USA cost. I'm still married either way at the end of the day, and I can sell some stuff and cover some cost either way, but I'm still a bit torn...

Any insight/advice is appreciated!

Rule of thumb: It's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.

I've got three skyline 5ers (55-01, 55-02, JO-5) and I love 'em all. Would I do a two-for-one trade? Well... I might.

How's that for a definite maybe???

an EXTREEMLY good question to ask...and no "face punch"....we are all friendly here...

it all depends...a refin will cost $300-$400...so you would be all in at between $1100 and $1500 for a used 55-02...not bad BUT you will NEVER get the refin costs back...the bass will always be worth $900 to $1100 or so (depending on the market).

If you buy a used US 55-xx for say $1800 to $2000 then you are at about $2100 to $2400 and the bass is still worth $1800 to $2000.....seems like less of a "hit"....

totally up to you....I have 2 "Keeper" Skylines that will never go anywhere....they are THAT good....nothing wrong with Skylines.

do what is in the budget and keeps you in bed (and off the couch) with the missus...:smug:

I understand asking for opinions, but this'll have to be your call as it depends entirely on how flush you are and how bad you want a USA model. If you're the type who will still be GASing for a USA even if you go the refin route then you have your answer. If you'll be happy and get on with life with the refin, I'd do that. Either way you'll have a great bass. Happy thumpin':p

Don't get me wrong I think the USA Lakland are the best basses around as I have owned many. Currently I own a 55-01 and I am happy as a clam. The neck fit and finish are awesome and Im a big fan of the bartolini tone which is the main reason I picked mine up.
