Necks, specs, questions, reflections for my LOG brethren:

Is a Bob Glaub model with a J neck any different than a Duck Dunn?
Are the 4-string Skyline J type necks with 1.5" nut width and "J taper" all the same design? E.g. DJ4, Duck Dunn, Bob Glaub w/ J neck, DPLEII. etc.

A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to check out and play a CAR Duck Dunn, and of course I wanted to love it. I hated it and as a Lakland devotee, I've been avoiding saying that out loud. It was extremely lightweight, but in a bad way. It had no heft, no mass, and it made me think of the crappiest Squier one might pick up. Set up aside, it didn't play great and sounded extremely thin when amplified.

I'd more or less concluded that a J neck isn't for me, but my EBMM Sterlings have 1.5" nuts and I love those. I'm certain that 1.75" P type necks are not for me. One of the reasons the necks on my Laklands seem perfect is the nut width between J and P specs.

Was the Duck Dunn I disliked simply a bad specimen?
Should I just give up on the idea of a Lakland P? (A custom US not in the financial cards!)

Foolishly sold my 55-02 Deluxe LE a while back and really regretted it. Just picked up an all black/rosewood 55-02 standard in the TB classifieds to fill its place. Already have a cherry pearl pickguard on its way to add some character. Should look pretty OH-mazing.

The 55-02 are astonishingly versatile basses. They cover every sound I think I would EVER need covered. It really is a tonal Swiss army knife.

Are those black tapes ? If so, how are you finding them ?

Looks really nice - I have the exact one and like you I put on a pickguard as well, really added something to the overall look I think. I agree, they are very versatile in their own way. I got mine to replace a stingray and it was what I always wanted the ray to be.

I just sold a black/maple 55-02 and picked up this beautiful natural/rosewood 44-02. Had it about a week and I am in love with it. The 5er just messed me up when I was playing out. I think you just had a bad apple. The j necks rock. I loved it in my DPLEII, Glaub w Jazz neck, and in my current Duck Dunn. The only difference in the Glaub with jZz neck is it won't have the binding and blocks, other than that, pretty much identical. I also love Sterling necks, and Lull jazz necks, and ... Just not the big F's jazz necks, can't stand those baseball bats.
