Hey all you 5502 owners. I am thinking this may be my next bass. I know the 5501 has been accused of being too clean and not aggressive enough in the mix. From the 5502s I have heard, this bass sounds a lot punchier and more aggressive.
I am a session player so I need versatility. At some point I will add a 4 string Fender P, but for now I want some nice grow that sits in the mix really well. Many of my sessions are R&B/Hip-hop and dance, but I literally get all kinds of work and can not predict what I will get each week.
Was wondering how well this bass tracks and sits in a mix before being processed.
A tone I love is a Cirrus 5 I am using on loan now. For example of what type of tone I want here is a track I played on for a client -

The J and P necks are all the same (with the exception of the DJ which has a slightly different profile)...the "Lakland neck" (i.e what is on a 44-94/44-02 etc) is different.
I think you got a hold of a "bad one"....any idea on the pickups? I have heard Fralin P, Lakland P and Neopunch...NONE sounded thin to me....what was the amp? any chance it was the amp?
maybe you do not like a J neck...I do not...I like the Lakland P necks though.
I have all fivers but you can try mine any day.
Foolishly sold my 55-02 Deluxe LE a while back and really regretted it. Just picked up an all black/rosewood 55-02 standard in the TB classifieds to fill its place. Already have a cherry pearl pickguard on its way to add some character. Should look pretty OH-mazing.
The 55-02 are astonishingly versatile basses. They cover every sound I think I would EVER need covered. It really is a tonal Swiss army knife.

the 55-02/ 55-94 is an ETREEMLY versatile bass and sites well in the mix....I have had several and love the way you can dial in different sounds....I think you would be well pleased....
Awesome..so could i get the tone in the sample track i posted? I have always been a fan of laklands yet have never owned one.
I want some growl and do not want a stingrayish tone. Never have been a huge fan of the music man for recording. Just personal preference. The youtube demos of the 5502 showcased a lot of nice punch and growl so i think ill be good.
I love the maple lakland necks....oh man..so sweet. Wide string spacing..35 scale..defined b...all the stuff i want.
So I know that you guys are probably growing wearing of my bipolar opinions on the shoreline gold JO I picked up recently. But let me tell you, it came to me with sadowsky electronics and I just got the brand new Neo Chis installed with a J-retro and I am totally blown away. I guess it goes to show that when you buy a bass, you should get the electronics that were designed to go in the instrument... I really dont want to drink the Kool-Aide, but I am finding myself more and more in to the Lakland
You are definitely not going to be stuck with just a Stingray tone, the 5502 can cop it to a good degree but many more options once you split the rear pup and blend in/out the front pup.
