Hadn't occurred to me... I'll have to run it by the songwriter. Hmmmmm...

Please do....:D

A cccouple quick pics. I didn't put all the PG screws back in yet. Yes, the Chis are in a solid cover.

look sweet!

LOVE the BEM!

you know...you can always buy a new RW neck from lakland and (maybe) get the bass refin'd...would be cheaper than a new bass...just sayin!

Funny, my Cirrus was my first high-end "new bass". The only thing I really miss about it is the look, lightly figured redwood top, she was pretty.

Now if only I could have a redwood topped 4-76, that'd be alright with me!

wow...redwood is cool!

I am sure you can run it by the guys (and Carl) and see what they say.... :)

So... it looks like I just scored ANOTHER set of Hanson Chisonic J bass pickups.... I have no idea what I am going to do with them yet, but the deal was too sweet to pass up!

OK - how???? :eyebrow:

Sweet.

Hunting down a 5502 natural/maple.

I see myself joining this club soon.

we will welcome you with open B strings of happiness!

wow...very nice...love it! congrats!

Are these also with normal covers? Not having the customary Chi shells is interesting, but quite nice as no routing is required.

agreed...also - no issues with shorting....SOME of the CHI's had issues (due to the chrome surrounds).

J - not sure they can have exposed poles on a CHI.....

kinda like the "stealth-I-ness" of the covers.

Yeah, I have the thought that they can't, for some reason. I'm more of a Fralins guy anyway...

I think the stealthy covers look good against an amber backdrop, but I think I'll always like exposed poles best.

Which is a purely visual thing, so it's not a make-or-break thing by any means...

Have any of you current DJ5 owners replaced your pickups? I like what I'm hearing from the Lakland single coils, but was just wondering what you playa's like.

Thanks, the fretboard is really nice. Once I got it cleaned up, it really shines. I think its going to look really great with a black PG. I talked to Brian today and I am going to send mine to use as a template for the black one.

I don't think I want to get a new neck just because the bass was built with this neck and I want to keep it together.

Scored the Chis in the classifieds. MrMatt had them for sale, came from the same batch as mine. I am certain I can find something else to put them in completely passive, the guys at Lakland wired me up some concentric pots to go with the pickups, so I just have to get a 3 hole control plate and some knobs. I have a refinned J bass on its way that might be the recipient of these pups.

One other thing that I would like to mention is that I am SO much more likely to order a custom bass from the guys at Lakland because their customer service is so good. I dealt directly with Brian and Bo and they were terrific. Its really nice to see a company that takes the time to deal with customers the way they do, even though I was only buying a set up Pickups and inquiring about a bass I got in trade.

Please do....:D

I think you just had a bad apple. The j necks rock. I loved it in my DPLEII, Glaub w Jazz neck, and in my current Duck Dunn. The only difference in the Glaub with jZz neck is it won't have the binding and blocks, other than that, pretty much identical. I also love Sterling necks, and Lull jazz necks, and ... Just not the big F's jazz necks, can't stand those baseball bats.

Dan:
The J and P necks are all the same (with the exception of the DJ which has a slightly different profile)...the "Lakland neck" (i.e what is on a 44-94/44-02 etc) is different.

I think you got a hold of a "bad one"....any idea on the pickups? I have heard Fralin P, Lakland P and Neopunch...NONE sounded thin to me....what was the amp? any chance it was the amp?

maybe you do not like a J neck...I do not...I like the Lakland P necks though.
I'm not sure what the pickup was in that particular DD. I don't recall what them amp was but I tried a DJ4 as well and it sounded ok from what I remember.

I'm trying not to conclude that I dislike J type necks outright. Puts a lot of limits on GAS if I accept that conclusion.
Oh and I have a hard enough time with 4 strings, so no 5-string basses for me even just to try!

I've had 2 Fender J's: A '75 re-issue and a Geddy signature (still have the Geddy actually). The Geddy is fast/quick but too thin and flat, not enough "meat" I guess.

My favorite look for a neck is rosewood with blocks, and the chances of finding the 4-94 type "Lakland neck" with blocks and binding are slim.

I'll take a ride back to the semi-local Lakland dealer that had the DD and try something else with a J. I don't like to do too much "window shopping" there since it's extremely unlikely that I'd be buying anything from them, as I pretty much only buy used from private sellers.

Thanks for the input and thoughts!

Ok I am in. I have a 5502 deluxe coming. Got it for under $1300.

Got to play the natural and cherry sunburst. I went with cherry sunburst/maple neck.

Few things I noticed..I liked the bass and treble on the middle, but the mids sounded sick boosted.

It definitely has the stingray vibe, but i was able to get more bite out of the tone with some tweakage. The pickups sounded awesome no matter which one I picked so I just was jamming with it in the middle.

Like I have read, there are a ton of tonal options with this thing.

What sold actually was the passive mode- wow. That is money in the bank for a rock gig (imo). As soon as I pulled the knob up and compensated for the volume loss, I was able to get the bass sounding a lot like a P real fast.

As for construction, the neck is incredible. I was in a guitar shop so I didnt want to start shredding around and being a wanker but it was super easy to rip on this thing just from the runs I tried.

Final thing is I tried a 5 string Fender P and it just was not in the same ballpark for me. B string was decent, but not as defined. The P tone is not versatile enough for how I like to play. Don't get me wrong, I probably will add a P down the road when I get a 4 string, but as a main session bass where producers seem to be liking more and more beef to the tone, it was no comparison.

The easy way to test that is to just play the bass unplugged. The Lakland sounded clear and defined unamped. Just an incredible bass.

Love mine too and agree on all points. Although, I wish the passive had a little more power to it, that is a pretty big jump in volume. Since I don't play with any pedals that leaves me adjusting gain at the amp, which I suppose is not all that bad. My 4401 with Chis, however, has a lot hotter passive mode in comparison.

Yes..well I am a 1 tone guy luckily. I will change tones per each session I play on, but if I am in a band, I dial a tone up that works for that band and never touch it again.

I have a feeling the passive mode could be slept on from reading about this bass, but for me it was what made me reach for my wallet. I love the active tones a ton, but the fact that I can go passive and dial up a J or P tone was a very unexpected bonus.

In your case, I would add a volume boost pedal for live shows.

I love the passive tone as well, a great deal - use it mostly for recording though.

I can not wait to do just that. I have many regular clients and know what tones they like..some really love that big fat active tone, but when I can go back to passive for the rock stuff, I think it will sound incredible.

yup! these guys are FANTASTIC! that is ONE of the main reasons I play them exclusively (wish they made an acoustic bass).....

Also - I would NEVER have a qualm about buying ANY Lakie used as I know I could get any "issue" handled one way or another....

glad they are taking care of you.

good luck!

I agree...love RW and blocks...

you can order a B&B lakie neck (1.63) from Lakland either for a new bass or as a neck in and of itself.

PS - HUGE Geddy fan but cannot play his bass (or a Markus Miller) for the life of me...neck is just too narrow.

Congrats you Lakie-wanker you!

good choice....glad you decided on the Cherry-burst!

I agree...tried several Fender P-5s and they just did not match up to the Skylines (even MIA Fenders)...the B and neck profile is soooooo much nicer (IMHO)...

the CHIs are much hotter passive....when I got my JO5CS the sound guy thought it was active!

...there is a small volume knob on the LH3 to eaualize the volumes passive and active....Carl says to not overdue it or you get distortion....details here:

Congrats you Lakie-wanker you!

good choice....glad you decided on the Cherry-burst!

I agree...tried several Fender P-5s and they just did not match up to the Skylines (even MIA Fenders)...the B and neck profile is soooooo much nicer (IMHO)...

Thanks, and yeah the cherry burst just looks perfect with all maple neck. Also it had some miniscule blemish on the back so it was less than the natural.

The P5s I played were MIA's and were basically the same price. There was no comparison to be honest.

And yeah, the neck on the Lakland is so good. I am not a big guy, dont have huge hands, and I made sure to run scales in C minor just to make sure the 35" was not an issue. Long story short, it's not at all.

Plus the wide spacing at the bridge...oh yessss..that just is key.
