:) haha!!! I thought about the GC thing--they wouldn't take a card that wasn't attached to the shipping address with the billing address. Maybe that was why they didn't take yours?

Now, Matt has offered to buy my other fretless...

Playing them both last night, they're both really...amazing. The feel of the Juan DJ is different, the huge coat of fingerboard lacquer makes a significant difference. The Chi's have more output and are a little more punchy. The Juan DJ has some buzz going on, but not if I switch it to just the P (of course)

Anyway, am I an evil evil person if I send the BEM blocks DJ to Carl Pedigo to get fretted?

Nah, just have one address. The guy I talked to wasn't positive on how to process it. He was going to have a manager call me back. Either way: glad you dig it and will actually play it. I'd have just flipped it on eBay, no question.

...and yes, fretting that bass would THE WORST ;)

I'll openly say, if I were to buy it, I'd buy a 2nd (fretted) neck... Like my old Skyline AC DJ.

Now for the details on the bass.

Photos

When I pulled it out of the box I immediately noticed some similarities to the DS JO that I have.

-Drop D tuner
-Custom thumb rest
-Hole on lower horn for strap pin
-Lots of wear on the body

Then I noted the similarities to [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

-Heavily lacquered fretboard
-P/J configuration
-3 way switch
-Side dots down the whole neck (on his Fender, he had the lines and dots painted, these added markers recalled Juan in that way)

After a quick google search, I found this

So there it is! I kinda want to call Guitar Center and let them know what they sold me. I have contacted Leo about the bass and he's going to let me know exactly what Lakland knows about it.

For instance, is the lacquer job done by Lakland? The side dots? (I would assume so). Is the 3 way switch factory?

Another note is the factory routed P/J configuration which they won't do anymore, making this bass truly one of a kind!

Oh man, that BEM blocks DJ is flat-out incredible. I stopped in to see Carl one day when he was working on that neck. Lots of love and care went into that one.

Naaah, you're not evil if you put frets on it. On one hand, it would be kind of a shame since it's such a great fretless. OTOH, this amazing bass deserves a long-term home, so if fretting it has that result, that would be cool.:)

I forgot all about that, and the bass looked oly white to me in that shot. Yes, love the shell pink refin.

Can't find it, but there should almost be a separate thread for some of these Laklands. The 5502/5594 has so many tonal options it is crazy. There are guys who do set the mid control to 250 over 600 and tour with that setting. Also some only string the higher strings through body and not all of them. I find that interesting and may try it as well.

Hoping to have mine on friday so I can post more impressions and maybe help anyone who is still trying to dial up the right tones.

I also find it interesting (and reassuring) that a PRO bass playa uses lines AND DOTS!

I feel vindicated in liking lines on my fretless.

those BEM lines are so nice it would be a crime!

either:

1) get another neck and leave this one (to be sold with it)
2) have another one built lie it and sell this one.

and yeah, dots and lines even for pros are real helpful even if they are good without them. Reason is because it is easy to get a bad in ear mix (especially in bands with big guitars) and now you are playing a little out of tune..which sucks.

I have played shows where the in ears just go out and the bass amp is pretty low for stage volume reasons..im fretted, so its no biggie, but fretless - that would be tough.

For a jazz session it usually is a smaller venue or a cleaner band so the bass tone is a lot easier to hear for the player.

Running a LowEnd "Booty In A Box" through the return on my tecamp binafide, bypassing the pre. This thing sounds so PHAT, with my Lakland DJ5, coming through my Glasstone Lil' G! The DJ has a clean vintage sound, SC pups, and the LE pre just boost that vintage sound to the next level. Loving this combination right now!
