My guess is he spent more time on his outfits and hair than his playing.DOn't get me wrong, I love Motley Crue and the dude sold more records than all of us combined, but he is definitely not one of my "influences"
I've always referred to that style of music as "hair pop metal". One of the most unfortunate subgenres of rock to come along, IMO. It sure didn't do us bass players any favors, either, most of the time the bass was buried under a zillion tracks of guitar and backing vocals. YMMV, of course.
