My guess is he spent more time on his outfits and hair than his playing.:D

I've always referred to that style of music as "hair pop metal". One of the most unfortunate subgenres of rock to come along, IMO. It sure didn't do us bass players any favors, either, most of the time the bass was buried under a zillion tracks of guitar and backing vocals. YMMV, of course.:)

I've heard a few stories from those books--crazy stuff! I guess some musicians figure if Keith Richards can live through all that junk, they can, too. Of course, as we all know, it often doesn't work out that way.

Yes, the Crue and bands like them were a marketing force to contend with no doubt, and a very good business. I always respected them as "entertainment", but not for music. I saw them once in the 80's and it was entertaining - especially the women on the front row :D

I feel largely the same about 90s grunge (I guess I'm a tad too young for 80s hair metal) and new hipster type music where the appeal is that they are too cool to be good musicians...

I would think image far surpassed playing ability.
But the guy and his band mates carved quite the niche in the business for themselves. And still put on a great show and fill stadiums. :bassist:

He for sure was never an influence of mine.
But I respect the guy.

I mentioned him initially only due to the way he has his bass slung down around his knee caps while playing on stage.

Awww come on man, lol. There's power in those songs. I used to hate hair band stuff but now that I'm playing some of it and see the audience's love for it.... I'm starting to "get it".

I never said people don't enjoy it, man do they ever! :bassist:
I truely believe it is high end entertainment, I am just careful with not confusing it with high end music :p There is a big difference to me, YMMV :D
I have no doubt that if I voted yes to playing it in my cover band the audience would go nuts. But as I said to them, I always laugh we I see old grey fat guys playing 80's hair music, and I don't want to be that old fat grey guy doing it :hiding:

Haha, all I know is you have to be true to yourself. When I stopped feeling "metal", I quit playing metal. I love all the songs that my band currently plays, and 5-10 years ago, I would've said I'd never play country or pop. But, I can really appreciate all kinds of music now... mind is way more open.

Not looking to go see HR, so I deal with it. He also plays bass in a "grindcore" band... ugh.

If that guy thinks he's 10 years younger, then more power to him.
