I am going against people as well and saying that I like the cream. I think that if it were me I would change the pickguard to something more plain to go with the cream covers though.

Thanks! Yeah...that would look good too...liking the added bling to set off the abalone blocks, but I was thinking of getting one and swapping back and forth.

Sorry Markus, those cream covers with the white pearloid just don't work for me.
Now if they matched one way or the other, then it would be different.

The guard is antique, not white. Personally, I don't like everything to exactly match. Think about your black basses...some of them have subtle changes in darkness between the parts. I hear ya on the blacks and sometimes those don't match either because some blacks aren't true blacks but have red and blue in them. An example of this would be a black t-shirt vs a black pair of jeans. Sometimes the t-shirt will often be a "red" black and the jeans a "blue" black. They're both "black" but they don't match.
That example you linked to works because the two colors, guard and pickup covers, have very similar hue values, just different brightness and saturation values. So there is a refined sophistication as you put it.
The cream covers with "antique" don't have the same hue range, at least in the photo - could be the guard picking up diffuse light from the sky. The antique looks like it is a blue or cool white, whereas the cream is a yellow or warm white.
So to me, that is why it is a yellow snow thing
But, I do prefer the lighter pickup covers on that bass.
Yeah...the guard is darker in person. I totally agree with you that black is not like the next black. Brown is really bad that way too. I'll see if I can get it closer in a photo. Antique pickguards vary too...maybe I need to hunt down the right antique, but this closer in tone than looks in that photo.

Marcus, FWIW I dig the cream PU and pearl guard a lot. My wife, who's tastes are probably more refined than mine, thinks white PU covers would be a little better, then said rosewood PU covers would be perfect. Cool idea, and I'm sure it would be a very expensive one,as well. 
I am just being sarcastic. Earlier he referred to me as "the new Terry" because I have acquired some pretty cool Laklands over a short time period. He then explained who Terry was... I was just joking because I told him I would probably swap the skyline for a US Model.

I'm going for this surf feeling with this bass. Abalone, Surf Green, dark neck wood (drift wood look), but still keep it looking like a traditional Jazz bass(exposed poles, pickguard, etc.). Okay, this might be a little out there... but maybe "Scheff" it up with some Kent Armstrong pickups? They could play off the abalone with being abalone.

I actually thought about that! I'm super diggin' the pickups in this bass, but if I didn't, I'd give them a try. So loving this tone though! This bass is just doing it for me!
Exactly... the shape would lend themselves nicely to the rolling surf feel.
Know how it goes, sometimes one must sacrifice aesthetics for tone.
I've got a pair a Lane Poor jazz pickups I'm dying to test drive in Nevermore, but not sure about the holograms gazing out of all the lovely blackness.
