Back story: When we bought the lake house three years ago it was surrounded by these huge, majestic Oaks, all 70-100ft tall. After a few months, some large limbs from 2 of the 4 Oaks in the back yard fell and they were rotted. So, we had those two cut down and discovered that the top 1/3 of both of those were hollow and full of water. Fast forward to this past Sunday evening, we get a call from the neighbor saying that he had witnessed this one fall and it sounded like thunder. No damage at all. Luckily it was leaning toward a vacant part of the yard away from the house.

My son, Jesse James, wanted to set it on fire as soon as we got here this afternoon. I would need a 36" chainsaw to get through most of this tree. I really would like a Luthier to take the wood for guitars or basses. I hate to think that this beautiful tree would be wasted. There is enough wood for at least 200-300 1/4" tops. The wood has beautiful color and fiber structure.

when you said mahogany...my first thought was weight...ALOT of it! I think you will like the Alder...and the ebony will add a nice bit of grittiness to the sound..

Anyways, I was talking to him yesterday because for some time we've been talking about him building a sister B-G to the "Carribean Burst" 54-95 I have that is set up E-high C. He was curious if maybe instead of making it a Lakland, if I would want to make it a "Pedigo" bass. I said I didn't care. Frankly a Carl Pedigo bass is a Carl Pedigo bass no matter what it says on the headstock.

So we were going to go with a Mahogany body, but he can't find anything light enough, so we're going to go with an alder body, ebony board, this crazy birdseye maple for the neck itself, and this beautiful 30+ year old flame maple top he bought from a harp maker a few years ago. THREE Chi humbuckers, passive: Vol, Vol, Vol, Tone....with a pull-up on each volume for single coil. Dark Cherry burst (technically Gibson's "Bourbon Burst" He said the neck is already in so we're moving right along! Getting pretty excited!

Good luck resisting the obsession....Every time I drive '90 I am tempted to exit and go to Lakland instead of bypass the exit.....:help:

REALLY glad there was no damage!

If you believe the wood is nice, seriously contact Lakland or a wood broker...you never know...
