Agreed. I appreciate the tone that single coils offer in situations where it is not noticeable. Some people shape their tone in such a way that it is not an issue. Shielding the pickups helps which some manufacturers do stock and it is always an option to quiet down others after the fact. For unshielded pickups in rooms with less than perfect circuits, it can be really bad, particularly if you like one pickup soloed and tone wide open.

If the audience can't hear it and neither can you in your IEMs, then it's not a problem. I've heard some really bad examples (guitar players way more than bassists) and if I can hear it in FOH it's a huge turn off. Very unprofessional IMO.

I'll color my earlier statements in this way: for rock style music in a live setting , hum should never really be an issue in a bass guitar. Line level noise can be addressed with ground lifts or cable shielding. For all other types of music, venues, and instruments my opinion is worthless... Well, it's probably worthless regardeless

That's great to hear. But bear in mind that North America and Europe has very consistent power. Asia and South America are a different story. You NEED everything you can possibly get to reduce hum.

Anyway, found this on the Lakand Owner's website forum. This looks cool.

My Duck Dunn P-Bass got the full shielding treatment to cut hum from external sources, and it really made a big difference. It's shielded in both the control cavity and around the pickups with copper foil.

I don't have a Lakland Jazz of any type, but IME shielding a Jazz really well, including the PU cavities, is very helpful in cutting noise. 60 cycle hum is always gonna' be there though.

I shielded my Duck Dunn and one of my 44-02's. The Duck was very quiet for a P before, and slightly more after. The 44-02 made no difference.

you have to remember that the grounding at the venue makes a difference as might the atmospheric humidity level. I've played on some hot, 100% humidity days and the hum seemed worse.

I copper shielded one of my 55-02's when I had a weird ground issue, but it wasn't a shielding problem, so I didn't notice the difference. I didn't mind doing it, cause a copper foil cavity is dead sexy. My subsequent 55-02 and AJ still have the conductive paint only.

Kinda digging the plain jane no guard look. Really though I'm just procrastinating the job of outlining a pick guard. More work then you'd think.

BTW this one is shielded with the black paint.

I'm really digging this bass, I had forgot the reason I bought this one. The ergo's! The minute I put it on I'm reminded,,Cozy comfy jazz bass.

Yeah, But you have such a grounded personality that no bass would dare hum in your hands. ;)
