Ran across this photo on the Raleigh News & Observer website from a July 5 gig. Nice shot of the 2004 Lakland Skyline hollowbody (first year of production) that I picked up on TB a couple of months ago and never will part with. (The bass is nicer-looking than the shorts, which we virtually never wear to gigs. )

Wow JJ! That's beautiful! Nice to see you won't be hurting so bad with your Coral P bass gone. Can't wait to get that body and go to Lakland and grab a neck from them. Now the big question. Rosewood or maple fretboard. Esthetically I prefer the look of Rosewood, but I kind of want a grindy, puchy p bass sound, so maybe maple is the way to go with that alder body. How aggressive are Neo punch P pickups? I've only played a Lakland P with fralins.

so...you are replacing the beautiful BEM neck? really? JK....that neck is beautiful BUT a sweet lakand neck would be excellent as well...

I loves me some RW...but just my opinion...I have several maple boards and like them as well....

Fralins = sweet, Neopunch = sassy

So my band is working through Circles by Incubus, and I took to the YouTubes to see how the masters did it and I noticed a gem in the video

that blue bass? I played it (Greg C can vouch for me) ....one really cool feeling and sounding bass! I forget which pickup they are...NOT Laklands.

Well, got to test the new 55-64 last night up in Amarillo. I absolutely just loved it all night long. Just what I was looking for in a 5 string p bass. Punched right through our two loud guitars and loud drummer. The B string is, I think the best B on any of my basses including other Laklands. Neck was super comfortable (as usual with Lakland). Lakland did it right on these.

I'm not the biggest fan of the Neopunch. It's a great pickup but I really like the vintage one in my 55-64. I mean I really like it. It seems to get a real good grind to it too. Not knocking the Neopunch at all, it's just not for me.

I like it so much I am....oh never mind...

Well, he's definitely cool. I'm not sure if playing Laklands automatically makes one cool, I've met many LOGers and a lot of us are way too dorky to be cool.

as for the rest of you? you are uber cool.....and the "real musicians" who play Laklands? even cooler....

how is the McFarland neck?

The '94 4-94 is unique! With both pups on, it sounds like the 60s jazzes I've played... select a different MM coil and its just variations of the same flavor . Solo the neck pup and its a vintage P. I've not had the pleasure of playing any 70s Stingrays but I'm sure that the solo'd MM pup comes close to nailing it. I'm sure the old wood and aged nitro contribute greatly to this, maybe the old Bart pups and pre help. Anyways, I no longer envy my friends with 60s Fenders. This bass covers what they can do and it's a Lakland. I was playing it thru my Ashdown Little Bastard (all tubes) and an old Carvin 18" cab. I'll try it thru other rigs but I'm sure the results will be similar.

The neck is amazing. Lakland necks offer much... this one offers even more muchness.

glad you like the necks....that is one reason I play them exclusively...never found a neck I like better!

I'm thinking about getting a simple 5 string passive Jazz and two Laklands seem perfect - The Joe Osborn and Daryll Jones

I'm concerned about the single coil pickups. Of course, all single coils are gonna hum! But I'd like to know from the people who play them here just how much hum do they get when they play.

I'll be using some effects - octave, envelope filter, overdrive, etc., and I want to know if I'll need to change to hum-cancelling pickups to do that.

Hanson DOES make split coil Js if hum is an issue....some people will argue they sound different...

I'm sure there are people who have... It's up to you really.

I have shielding in some of mine...no shielding in my Skyline JO...a bit of hum but not irritatingly so...

One of the reasons I'm focused on getting a 4-94 type of bass is the guaranteed dead quiet electronics.Pit work..Big stage..ect.

And I'm a Jazz style bassist at heart.

A 4-94 might work for you then....you can get a TON of different sounds due to the J/MM set up and the pre-amp...

That's great to hear. But bear in mind that North America and Europe has very consistent power. Asia and South America are a different story. You NEED everything you can possibly get to reduce hum.

Anyway, found this on the Lakand Owner's website forum. This looks cool.

Kinda digging the plain jane no guard look. Really though I'm just procrastinating the job of outlining a pick guard. More work then you'd think.

BTW this one is shielded with the black paint.

I'm really digging this bass, I had forgot the reason I bought this one. The ergo's! The minute I put it on I'm reminded,,Cozy comfy jazz bass.
