I've only been playing bass since 2010, and I always felt a little unimpressed with P-basses (The Dude being an exception). Until recently I hadn't tried playing with a pick, instead preferring finger style. Well, last night I discovered the amazing sound of a P bass with the tone cranked being played with a pick. Although I think fundamentally I'm always going to be a jazz bass enthusiast, I finally gained a solid appreciation for the Precision. I suppose it helps that it was a Lakland...
On that note, I played my Glaub this past Sunday and got lots of compliments on the looks (some on the sound too). Wilkins' CAR is so rich...

How many inches is it from the nut to the middle of the MM pickup on a 5502? I'm trying to figure out MM sweet spot location on a 35" scale bass. Thanks!

Ok, Skyline owners......here is my dilemma. I bought the natural Lakland about a year ago and it plays like a Lakland should and is easy on the shoulders. Now, about 6 months ago I bought the older model dlx. The older 55-01 is so much heavier. Almost too heavy to continue to gig. I did a little research on the topic of weight differences between Skylines, but switching between these 2 basses is night and day weight wise. So, I am trying to decide if I want to sell the dlx and buy another natural (newer) model or is this still an ongoing weight issue that I might get another heavy 55-01 even though it might be a newer model.

You need a 44-02D or a 55-02D to balance everything out...
My 55-01 and 55-02 feel the same to me, but they both have premium tops. My 44-60 is the lightest bass I have ever played, it's around 8.5lbs and is a one piece body from what I can tell. I'm guessing that the 55-01D is heavier because of the glue that is used on the top and the the body may be 2 pieces, again, glue.
IME, the Indonesian Skylines are a little more consistent in terms of weight. I'm sure there are a number of 10-pounders out there, but I've found fewer that were crazy heavy (say 11+).
In my experience each specimen is different. There are lightweight and heavyweight basses from USA Lakies as well as Skylines.

Just ask for a light one to whoever you buy from. When I had a made in Korea 55-02 it was just as light as my current USA Lakland

My Skyline Duck Dunn is the heaviest bass that I own...but it sounds goooood!!!
Here is my 55-64 that picked up a few weeks ago. I still need to have the fret edges smoothed, but it sounds great and plays like a dream! My teacher loves its tone.
don't have an svt but my Lak fiver sounds good through either of these rigs - on the left, Traynor YBA 200 on a Genz Benz Neox 212; on the right, Streamliner 900 on a stack of Bag End 15s.

It sure is. And somehow still seems the best playing bass I've ever owned.
So I finally found a US Duck Dunn (~8.5 pounds) with the intent of eventually transforming it into "Duck Dude". The neck profile seems different. It is 1.5" nut width (I measured) yet feels significantly chunkier than I expected, particularly in the first 4-5 frets (which is where we earn our money!) It doesn't seem to me to be related to the finish on the back of the neck - it's more how it rests in the crook of my hand. The action is a little high but doesn't seem that bad. Perhaps the nut is high. I dunno, I'll get it (and the Dude) in to Carl I guess.
I played one once and it seemed to be pretty light, maybe 9 lbs. 12 seems really heavy for a Lakland.
