Sorry to hijack the thread slightly, but I'm about to become a Lakland owner, and I'm wondering about road/flight cases for a 55-01.

What do some of the Lakland Owners Club members use?

If you want to lug around a road case for your bass, more power to you. I carry my bass around in a Protec Contego gig bag. It's very well padded, has stiff sides, and great storage.

I removed the pg to send to Leo but I find I really like the look without it. I may go ahead and get a clear pg made as well.

I haven't had the opportunity to, but if the need arose I would just do carry on and it would be fine.

You have a very optimistic view of airlines.

I have seen them force someone to check a guitar in a gig bag, so I wouldn't want to take that chance. I've also been on planes that were literally too small for a bass in a gig bag. Between Chicago and Kansas City last August, for example.

I fly a lot. I don't always take a bass with me, but I often do. I've got an anvil flight case that I picked up cheap but have only used once because it's so heavy- it also is a beast to fit in a rental car. I've got some fly in dates coming up this year, and I'm planning on only using it for that type of thing. I also have a branded/fitted standard hardshell cases for most of my 6 basses but I'd NEVER check one of those on an airplane, they're for trailer/back of the van travel.

All of the times I've flown with my basses in the last 4 years I've carried on a bass in a Levy's Leather gig bag. I KNOW I'm taking a chance, but it's a calculated chance.

1- I'm POLITE, and don't expect the airline to cater to me.
2- I've gained status with and airline and I stick with them.
3- I'm EARLY to check in at the airport and at the gate.
4- I keep my gig bag as small as possible. Just the bass in a very form fitting, but well padded bag. I also carry the bass neck pointed down, parallel to my body. This way the neck isn't sticking up over my head, and the bottom of the bag is even with my shoulder. I'm not trying to sneak it on board, but I'm not drawing attention to it either.
5- My bass is my only carry on. My clothes and other things get checked. I MAY have a messenger bag with a laptop, but not always, and it goes under my feet. Also- I either sit in select seating in the very front or in the VERY last row. If I'm the first on the plane and it's already stowed, someone may grumble, but it's first come first serve... if I'm in the very back, and someone is still looking for overhead space, they're already SooL.
6- If all else fails, I keep a copy of FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012 Section 403 printed in a plastic sleeve in the pocket of my gig bag.
7- Did I mention I'm Polite?
8- I'm also lucky.

Most of the trips I've carried on have been personal trips, no gigs on the other end, other than jamming with friends. If something happened, I'd be heart broken, but I'd look at it as an opportunity finally get the 55-94 I want but can't justify. BUT- when there's a gig on the other end of the runway... I'm carrying my backup on as above and the primary is going in the anvil and getting checked.

I LOVE my Levy's bag, but If I didn't already have it, and 3/4 of it weren't paid for with a gift card from a generous friend 12 years ago, I wouldn't spend the $400 they're asking for them now. The Reunion Blues Continental and Aero bags are pretty darn amazing for stiffness, protection and style, of the two, I like the Aero a little better because it is smaller and takes up less space in an overhead. I know 3 bassists that have carried on in Aeros and had no problems.

I'm Australian, so unfortunately we're even more limited when it comes to what we're allowed to bring on board. OTOH, I've heard rumours that one of the larger airlines over here (who I fortunately fly with already as they have special deals for checked baggage for musicians) is planning to make changes to their carry-on rules, which will allow musical instruments to be taken on board. Until that happens...

I apologise if I sounded like a smartarse in my reply earlier - I'm searching for a hard case/anvil case more than a gig bag as I don't really have a choice no matter how nice I am. Different rules for a different country. Sucks.

I checked my Warwick flight case tonight with the Lakland, but no luck. Not quite long enough in the body compartment or total length, so back to the drawing board.

Hello Lakland fanatics,
been wanting to own a Lakland for a few years and I think I might make the plunge next year for my 30th b-day. What I want is a Lefty P/J 44-64 black/rosewood/tort, like my '99 fender HRP. One thing that I'm curious about is the placement on the bridge pickup. on most of the ones I've seen, they have the jazz butted up close to the pickguard, then while searching the net, I found this P/J 44-64 with the jazz moved back towards the bridge. That is the placement I'd want on my 44-64. Now my question is, can Lakland do this? or are they pretty much deadset on their specs? Thanks in advance.

Hi,everyone! I just got my skyline DJ5 and figured it would be great to join the club. It's a 2006 model so a korean made with Aero pickups(which are very very sweet). The previous owners(I'm the 3rd owner) took great care of the thing, it's in great condition. Coming from 4 strings the DJ5 is one of the basses that made me fell "at home" while playing despite it being a 35" scale. Also, it's equipped with the J-Retro preamp which makes it, well, nothing short of AMAZING! IMO one of the best Jazz-style bass, if not THE best, out there in its price range.

Quite heavy, though. I can't really put up with heavy basses, but this one is well worth the weight!

My assumption was you were just looking for a case for your bass, not that you plan to do a lot of flying with it. My bad!

Great points were made by funkyebk, but if you plan on checking your bass get a good road case from Anvil or Road Ready.

It definitely looks good naked!

I've never been a fan of the clear guard personally...I think it looks cheap and it doesn't really do anything. I've found that when I do play with a pick, I tend to position my hand towards the bridge where there's no guard anyway, but perhaps your different. I say go red/brown tort or leave it off!

Is that just me or do this differences really only really come out when you're in front of an amp ?

Welcome to the club! I've got a red AJ that I swapped a maple neck from a 55-02 with and loaded with Aguilar OBP3 preamp. Love it, as I'm sure you'll keep loving yours! What kind of gigs are you using your AJ on?

...and that AJ sounds WONDERFUL.....I can tell you from personal experience...
