Love those older 55-94’s in shoreline gold… it’s a bit darker than other manufacturers, and just hits that sweet spot for me… :drool::drool::drool:

I've got a 4-knob Uni-Pre left over from another project, I've been thinking of putting it in my long-scale Skyline Hollowbody.

I love the tone I get from my HoBo, but there are times when I wish I could dial back the bass a notch, sweepable mids wouldn't hurt and I'd much prefer a blend knob vs. the three way pickup switch.

If I remember correctly the Uni-Pre has a push/pull for active/passive and a tone knob that works in both modes. Really nothing to lose, IMO.

I’m not sure, but I did notice the J pup had covered pole pieces. My old 5594 had an exposed pieces on the J pup. Not sure if it’s same pup as my 5594, but just with a pup cover, or perhaps a different model. I’d assume both pups on the 494 are passive. Nonetheless, that’s the same sound my 5594.

Not the 55 series but I recently put the newest gen of Bart Quad coil and neck J pup suggested on their website for Lakland replacements. Brighter than the first gen Bart pups that were in my 1995 4-94.
I also put in JE Unipre 5 knob with sweep able mids, very important. Push pull active passive that also functions as master tone that works in active or passive. Very impressed with the results.
Ray tone of just the full Quaud coil comes very close. Coils selected to give me J bass is awesome, ala Marcus Miller! Everything else is gravy.

Lākland knew what they were doing, offering up a more rock/aggressive pickup choice.
