I am nothing if not predictable... It was a unique opportunity made easier in that it was a 55-60 neck and I had a 55-60 body that might make a nice home for it and make it 'authentic. And, while probably of no real value other than in my own mind, it was a 2015 serial numbered neck which fell perfectly in line with my 2015 55-02 and 2015 fretless neck so I felt that might help with interchangeability and three would all the same 'vintage'.I kind of figured you were going to get that neck on the classifieds...
Been mulling this. The dots fit the current slightly yellowed/aged scheme better where the blocks and binding are more white where a pearloid binding would be a better match, ala a DJ5

Actually, I don't think it is a buyers' market. But it is not a sellers' market either. There is somewhere in between. Sellers are not getting what they are asking for (unless someone really wants that one bass they are selling). But that doesn't mean they are dropping prices either. Everyone is trying to hold on to see if it turns around.
By the way, I've been following the 55-AJ market for a few months... they are very few, and the ones that popped up were around $4k. So for this buyer, it was a steal.

I had a request to get a picture of my fretless AJ style bass.... Even though I think it's technically on the records as just a 5560 active base
Been kind of a busy day with lots going on around the house so this was the first chance I got
I decided to do it Markus style!
When I bought it it had a fretted neck that was ebony.
I thought it must sound really good as a fretless so I had my friend Carl take the frets out and replace them with birds eye maple lines.
The preamp is the LH3 and it does sound absolutely fantastic.
I've had several offers to purchase it but so far it's not going anywhere

From what I’ve seen, yes. It tends to be darker than it appears in many pics.
I can only imagine how that bass feels and plays! Carl is a master of the fretless board! I’ve got to pick his brain someday and see if he’ll tell me some secrets.
I’m with you. I always lean toward dots. I’ve had two basses without dots. One, which I still have, is an original Fender Aerodyne from 2003 when they first introduced them. The other, which I foolishly got rid of, was a Euro Spector with crown inlays. I firmly believe all Spectors should have crowns. Aside from that, dots, dots, and more dots.
Also, on the topic of finding the “perfect bass”, I’ve also given up. I really believe my US 44-60 is the closest I’ll come to ever finding exactly what I want. Lākland shimmed the neck for me so I could have low-low action without bottoming out the saddles, the feel is incredible, the neck construction is exactly what I like (one piece quartersawn maple, graphite rods, and a single action truss rod with butt adjust), and it looks incredible. I’d prefer something in candy apple red, maybe with rosewood as well, but for the playability, I’ll take the seafoam green and birdseye maple. I knew it was meant to be mine when I picked it up in the store a year ago.
Glad you have a bass that really does it for you. Let’s see a pic of that bass?
I know I’ve probably posted this pic before. I did modify it slightly… I built my own VVT plate for it (using CTS pots and cloth wiring) and threw a Hipshot BT1 on it
