Lakland Owners Group #69

Hey guys, I'm working on a concept for a custom build and I love the sound of the older 4-94s. Anyone know if the Barts in those would be more in line with the "Original" or "Classic" Barts they are offering now?

I did do some preliminary searching on this and couldn't find anything.

I had a 55-94 that I ordered in ‘98 and sold it years ago. Just got another one from another TB-er so maybe I can join the club now? Still have the old t-shirt and gig bag.

The new one came with stainless rounds on it but I’m more of a nickel guy. Lakland says they might not have string sets back in stock for awhile. What are you nickel roundwound fans playing these days? I’d rather string through the body but that might limit the options.

Dunlop Super Bright nickel are my faves, but I always string through the bridge so no comment on through body with these. I think a lot od DR will do through body. Sunbeams are always nice but any DR nickel string will likely not disappoint.

I've grown fond of EB Super Slinkies on my 5594's with Barts. They seem to give a little personality in the upper mids that helps to sit clearly in the mix. Almost a bit of grit or roughness...hard to describe.

I’ve got dunlops on my 5594 at the moment and enjoy them. Top loaded as the B string is too short for thru body. Mine are 125 gauge and the B string is a tad light . You might try a 130

Just became a Lakland owner. I’m lovin’ everything my new (used) DJ5. Slim neck, surprisingly silent pickups, a unique wood grain midway up the neck, and only 9.4lbs.

It came with DR hi beams 45-125 though I’ll probably switch to Dunlop Super Bright nickel 40-120 when I refresh. I’ve been curious about them for a while and I’m fine with stringing at the bridge.

I’ve strictly played 4 strings for the last 15+ years and though I consider my technique pretty solid, I’m feeling a little strain in the back of my fretting hand after playing the B a lot. I’m guessing it’s cause my tendons are stretching more than usual and I hope it’ll fade with time. The only other 5 I ever owned had 16.5mm spacing and a smaller nut width so the DJ5 is new and expansive territory for me.

Very nice. One thing to watch for. If you do to the 40-120 Super Brights, as you may already know, you'll likely need a truss rod adjustment as they're probably a lighter overall tension. Pre 2015ish per Lakland "the Skylines used to be single action, but for the last 7 or 8 years, they're all been dual.". It's an important thing to note necause teh lighter gauge may not pull the neck into enough relief and a single action rod won't help. I have had some that were hard to get to cooperate. If you have a dual action you are all set and can force the required relief. Just a thought.

Got it. Mine is a 2022. Which size hex keys do I need for the truss and saddles? I didn’t get any tools with the bass but have metric and imperial sets at home.

Speaking of lower tension has anyone here tried light gauge strings on a DJ5? How’s the B?

I prefer lights or hybrid light/medium on my 4s especially for bending and vibrato.

Nice score, congrats! I almost pulled the trigger on it, but I already have a DJ5.

That info came directly from Brian at Lakland in November 2023.

Along with this:

"The Skylines are dual action and the US models are single action."
I don’t think they advertise that anywhere on their site. That’s something that they should probably have listed there. I personally prefer single action. You don’t have a dead spot in the adjustment range, you can remove the nut if needed to add a washer for additional adjustment. And if the nut were to ever strip, you can remove it and change it. It’s highly unlikely you’d need to add additional forward bow. I guess super light strings could require it but most sets would have enough tension. Maybe it’s just me and my experience with them, but I’ve had dual action truss rod basses (some pretty expensive ones) that didn’t seem to have enough range and couldn’t get straight enough with standard .045-.105 or .45-.100s, or where the optimal spot for relief was in that dead area with no tension on the rod and you could hear it rattle in the neck. I’m not saying I’m 100% opposed to one, I’d just like to adjust it myself before buying it to get a feel for its range and how it sets up.

Hi all. I posted this elsewhere, but someone suggested I try this thread.

I just purchased a used Lakland 55-02 Skyline Custom bass. It is awesome, however, I have a very specific issue that I can't find any information about. I have been searching for days, and also sent a message to Lakland, but no response from them yet.

When I have the coil tap toggle switch in the middle (bridge pickup in humbucker mode), then rotate the pickup pan knob all the way towards the bridge, the D and G strings drop out almost completely. This doesn't happen when I set the toggle the switch towards the bridge or neck (single coil), only the middle position and it doesn't affect the B, E, or A strings. I read that it may be gunk in the electronics, so I did a thorough cleaning with electrical contact cleaner, but the issue remains. This also happens in passive mode, so I don't think it's an issue with the preamp. My guesses are that there's a wiring issue, the toggle switch is bad, or the pickup is bad, but can't be certain. I compared to the wiring diagram from Lakland, and it all looks normal. I messaged the guy I bought it from and he claims he bought it new from Sweetwater in 2020 and made no modifications.

Interestingly enough, when it's in humbucker mode, I was tapping the pickup under the string on both coils with an Allen wrench and there is output. It seems to be as loud as the other 3 strings. On that same note, when I tap the string with the wrench, I get a loud percussive sound, but seems to be missing high end. This makes me think maybe there's cancellation happening since it won't pick up the string vibration. I think the Lakland MM pickup has 4 coils, 2 under the D and G, so this makes the most sense to me.

Thanks for your help!

Just replaced the original clover tuners on my JO5 with lollipops. They're so pretty:drool::drool::drool:
I wonder if Hipshot would sell just the tuning keys and not the whole tuner. I’ve thought about doing that on my JO4, but I don’t want to drop the money on 3 HB1s and 1 BT1… changing the keys out is pretty easy as the tuners are reversible for LH or RH use.

I don't think so. Hipshot's customer service is great but they probably won't sell you separate keys. Oh by the way: it depends on the tuners if they're reversible. I asked Hipshot about the BT1s on my JO4 and they're an older generation, so not reversible or exchangable with lollipop keys.

Yeah, I’ve reached out to them for other stuff in the past. They have pretty good customer service. I’m pretty sure I’ve dealt with Oscar there. My HB1s are the current ones they make that came on my bass. I know I could take mine apart. I actually like the older ones more from an athletic standpoint with the longer keys. Are yours also reverse gears?

Lakland got back to me. They say the bridge pickup is probably bad. I confirmed it's a phase issue by reversing the wiring which made the issue move to the B, E, and A strings. I ordered a new bridge pickup.
