Lakland Owners Group #69

Probably so, though I ordered in late 03, my bass was delivered in Mar/Apr 2004 but my S/n is 6713, made in USA.. My understanding was that our basses were the last that used the same body style as the 55-94 but were cut for dual J pickups like on the Willie Weeks.
Cool! Yeah, sounds like ours are siblings. My serial number is 6756.

You covered it all really well. That said I just had a 2002 Glaub that had a nut width of 1.625". I think there were just some randoms like that and they weren't intentional. I would say its the exception because I had not seen one before on an early year. The natural ones only had one run so they are not common at all. Thats a great price for one
Thanks @macribas and @Johnny Alien. The serial is 03043664 so something’s off with your formula since April 36, 2003 doesn’t exist. Regardless, it’s clearly a 2003 and the 64th bass made. Does this mean the 64th natural finish Glaub? not a critical thing, just curious.

I’ll have to make a trip to check it out. Curious about the nut width, neck profile and weight.

What is the model name for what used to be the Dunn? I’m reading online that it’s 44-64 but isn’t that the Glaub? Or did they merge into one with a P body and J neck?

Comparing the Dunn to the Glaub Skyline, is the Dunn a slimmer profile? I’d prefer slim, though I’m not a huge fan of block inlays on a P. This Fender Dunn limited run, on the other hand, I love. I wonder why Lakland and Dunn went in a different direction.

The first two digits will tell you the year but I don't think there is any pattern to the remaining numbers. I would doubt that there are more than 30 natural Skyline Glaubs

You seem to be missing a number. As far as I know the Skyline serial numbers have 9 digits, as the picture below:

Maybe the Korean have less numbers? Either way, year and month seem to work. Even before you mentioned I was going to guess that bass was a 2003.

And by the way, Lakland Skyline serial numbers are for the whole line of products. Not divided by model. Actually I think they stamp the necks even before they are added to the bodies.

The Dunn was a P with a J neck, blocks and the red color. Currently there are no Skylines in that configuration. In fact it's been a while they haven't made the regular Skyline 44-64 (just the P pickup). All the recent batches have been 44-64 Customs (P+J).

Got it. Yeah the seller sent me a pic of the serial so it must’ve been different when they were made in Korea. I asked her to send me the nut width. If it’s closer to 1.5 I’ll probably grab it. If it’s closer to 1.625 I’ll pass. My main basses are around 1.55-1.625 and I’m kinda itching for a skinny guy to add to the mix. I wish the Dunn came with a maple board and dot inlays back then.

For those of you using Nordstrand Jazz pickups, are you favoring the single coil or split coil/noise cancelling version?

Any guidance on their more 'modern' sounding version? It seems the standard Alnico V favors that naturally. Not sure if the split coil mellows things appreciably Standard Lakland sets are single coil and sound great so that's where I am torn.
I use the NJ5 single coils with the 2B+ preamp. I favor the bridge pup sometimes with a slight turn of the pickup blend with zero noise.

Finally able to piece together a full set of something. Delanos are first in. Domestic in stock availability on anything I was interested in has been a challenge. Nordstrand is still 3 weeks out, And a set of Bartolini B-Axis probably 2 weeks out. These were pieced together with the P from a dealer in Maine, and the J shipped in from Spain. Funny thing about these is tha, having ordered both teh same day, the UPS delivery from Spain to NY beat the USPS delivery from ME to NY by 3 days! And that was with a one day mechanical delay in Germany. My town in NY to them in ME is a 5 hour drive... Me to Spain is, well, more.

I think I got a little carried away with the pickup shopping though. Never had Delano's before and have always been curious so a good opportunity to try them. Videos I have watched they sounded good. I do think that the sleeper of the trio for me will be the Bartolini B-Axis set. Just every video I have watched they sound really good. I had not heard of them, and I don't hear them discussed much, but I think they're the ones I am most excited about. I know the Nordstrands and I was bit late in cancelling them so worst case those are safe and familiar friends that I can fall back on. When all the dust settles I can sell of those not selected.

Dummied this up quickly. I should have these wired in with the Audere preamp tomorrow

Is this the natural 44-64 on Reverb you’re talking about?
I’d loooove a 44-64 with a 1.625 nut, my dream P bass. My past 44-64’s have been full-fat 1.75, which is a little much for me, beautiful basses though!
Would be a pain (read: expensive) to get that one to the UK though I wager 😞

Do you know if a shield ground was added to the poles on the NJ5 pickups? Just curious in case I try swapping the NJ5S with an NJ5 or try NJ5 pickups on another bass.
Not sure. But, my Tech ran a ground wire from the input to every pot on my bass. It’s super quiet!

Question for DJ5 owners.

How does the 35” scale of the DJ5 feel compared to a 34” Fender J?

Considering the placement of the strap buttons and bridge, how is the distance from frets 1 to 4 compared to a 34” J?

Sometimes I play one finger per fret in the first position, depending on the passage, and I’m curious if the DJ5 will wear my hand down.

Found a deal on a DJ5 in natural with black guard but have to travel far to try it. Seems great on paper. Never played a 35” in my life.

EDIT: Read this thread and lots of feedback that the DJ5 "reach" isn't substantial and is actually easy to transition to from a 34". Glad to hear that! Gonna go buy this bass, I think.
