Speaking of preamps, I’m still really tempted to try out a J-retro in my 44-60. Anyone fit one into a US 44-60? The control cavity on them seems tight (I had to try a couple different plates when converting to VVT from the stacked knobs).
My 55-60 came with a J-Retro and it fit just fine

I have a DJ4 that has a 4-band Audere pre with passive tone. It came to me that way so I don't know if this was from Audere or if the previous own modified something. Come to think of it, I believe the jack was moved to the side and the space used for another tone pot. So it is possible but not a drop in.
I have a DJ 5...that would be great news if an Audere could work with this bass!
Been digging my 5594 with stock pups and pre. Neck pickup has some nice grit to it when I dig in. Bridge coil barks. Just the most versatile bass. Sounds like a record every time I play
I thought that might be the one and I have good news. The standard Audere Jazz preamp will work with your stock DJ plate and I have done it several times. With a few caveats and things to know. The Z-Mode would also work but requires a bit more of a commitment to use all the features. I have always been very happy with Jazz 3 band. In a past conversation with Audere they didn't recommend a straight install into the DJ plate with the fear being that because teh overall pot shaft spacing is just a bit shorter than the DJ plate holes that it could cause undue stress on the pots. I understand that and there are a couple ways to alleviate that but in general I have not had any concerns with any that I have done. This shorter spacing causes the second and third pot to just make contact with the threaded pot shaft (see pic below). It is in no way excessive and can be alleviated by, if one chooses, lightly filing that contact area just a bit to offer a bit more relief. I have not but you could. And if you ever return to stock that small area would be fully covered but the stock shaft washers. It's a minor thing. FWIW, I believe that Audere also separately sells pre-drilled DJ plates to accommodate the LED and switch as needed. I do know that Lakland sells DJ plates, last purchased at $30.00 + $6.95 shipping so there are a lot of additional options. My thought was that the Audere pre is such a great value that adding the cost of a plate still came in well under what most other complete plated systems cost.
Another thing to note if using yours, or an undrilled DJ plate, is that will slightly bend down the battery status LED and lose that feature because you can't see it. I have done both and it's not been an issue either way.
This drawing was from Audere as I recall. My added line shows the straight orientation of the three control holes which align with the board mounted Audere pots. So that orientation is fine.
This shows the DJ plate overlaid on a standard jazz plate drawing. You can see the two points where the Audere pots. Ignore the fourth/jack hole as that is not board mounted on the Audere with plenty of room to work with. This was one of my drilled for the battery LED plates:

One other thing, all mine were also fitted with a battery box but I see no reason that the battery wouldn't fit in the cavity.
Let me know if I can provide any additional info or detail. But don't fear giving it a try. You don't need to do any drilling unless you really want to and teh plate is soft and easy to work with. Most of mine were not drilled.
Wow. Thank you for sharing all of this! I would love to try a 4 band and don’t need the Z switch but it seems the 3 band is nice and simple.

Yes. Audere plate is a drop-in for the 55-60. The DJ is a different animal though as it has a curved plate. I thought Audere used to supply one in the past but not positive.
