Lakland Owners Group #69

Just received the new 55-02, and looks like i too have an off-center installed bridge :/

No it is not a perspective effect. Yes it would have bothered me much. So i will return it.

Apparently I forgot to post a picture here of the 55-60 Classic I got about a month ago.
Got it off the classifieds here. Too good a price to pass up.
I bought it from the original owner that got it 6 months ago.
Great bass!!. Really lightweight. Plays great.
I'm trying to get comfortable on a 5'er again after playing 4's for the last 5 years.
Hope to add another US Lakland to the stable next week 🤞

Whoa! Love shoreline gold. Looks great. You'll get it back, just keep playing and avoid picking up a four for a while.

Well....I'm afraid I'm back out of the LOG.....just something with the 55-02 didn't do it for me so I sold it this past week. Should have stuck with my initial feeling to go with either a DJ5 or a 55-60 but what can you do! I'll get another Lakland again someday. Keep rockin' and I will definitely be hanging around here to see what everyone is up to.

You'll be back... Eventually. 😄

If you liked the playability but couldn't bond with the tone and setup, I'd highly recommend the DJ5 if you want to get back to a Lakland. Sure you could get a 55-60 but something about the body shape of the DJ5 just felt really nice and comfortable. I used to have one but only sold it due to the weight. So if you find a light one (≤ 9 lbs), jump on it or at least strongly consider it.

I bought a DJ5 about 10 years ago that was great on weight and playability but developed an issue with the neck. I had several other basses at the time so it just kind of got left sitting in the gear closet. I eventually pulled it out and took it to a luthier friend who got it back into playable condition but it always kind of bugged me so I ended up selling it on the cheap. The guy who bought it played it for a while and then he ended up selling it. It was somewhere in the mid 9 pound range and totally fit the bill for me before the neck issues so I'd for sure rock one again!

That's disappointing man, hope you can exchange it for one that makes you smile - I've had 3 different 55-02s over time (2020-2025), all of which were fantastic and without issue - let us know how you make out!

Not even the best Quality Control catches everything. If I were in your situation (which I'm not) I'd want to know that re-centering the bridge would
block the string ferrules preventing the through body string option. I think I'd wan't a new one rather than mess with that.
The holes would definitely have to be sealed and then re-drilled.

And I agree with you. A new one is probably the best option. And I'm sure Lakland will Make this right. They always do.

That's part of the plan, I already had option B in mind while ordering this one.

My plan B is a cherry satin sunburst 55-02 with a roasted maple neck. I have tested it on person and it has no flaws besides a tiny scratch on the nut and a minor dead note on the G string at 7th fret (a common thing in fender-like basses).

Ah, those lovely dead notes. I think it’s more of a 34” scale thing, not a Fender style thing (I have no real experience with a 35” scale bass). I have had basses with all sorts of neck construction (flatsawn, flatsawn with graphite rods, quartersawn with graphite rods, and roasted flatsawn). I have yet to own a 34” scale bass without at least the hint of a dead note on the G string, usually around D flat to E flat. Some are worse than others. I had a US G&L that I had to move on because the D was so dead, it would turn to a harmonic within a fraction of a beat. That said, a Fat Finger (now made by Fender) does the trick and moves the dead note to something outside of the range of the instrument. I took a huge deep dive on this topic about 5 years ago when I thought it could be solved on my G&L. Luckily it is minimal on my Lākland. And, it’s one major reason I hate buying without playing first (but I still have done it from time to time).

I was an Ibanez and Fender player prior to discovering Lakkies - I didn't like the string spacing, action (hard to get lowered to my preference), often uneven frets and dead spots - that and I couldn't get the output I wanted out of my fender jazz basses, mostly Pro series. The nail in the coffin was the consistent dead spots on my fenders, a bugger when recording for film projects - when I got my first Lakland a 2020 55-02 deluxe honey burst with maple fretboard, I was stunned - the action, feel, clean punch and no dead spots. I was sold. Outside of 1 out of 8 lakkies over the years, I have had nothing but same results on all my skylines and now 2 USAs. The 1 exception was a 2021 44-02 deluxe with a roasted neck, no dead spots but the truss rod was inoperable - my local lakland dealer called Lakland, they replaced the neck. That bass sounded amazing, but was so heavy! :)

I'm glad you're enjoying the bass.. It was one if the nicest 55-60's I've ever owned, but I just can't handle 35" scale anymore..

Damn I am about to buy a 55-02 with a roasted maple neck (2023). I hope it doesn't have the trussrod adjustment issues.
