Lakland Owners Group #69

The holes would definitely have to be sealed and then re-drilled.
I have had more than one Skyline with the exact same issue, and have moved the bridge to correct. That said you can have the issue of the original location leaving noticable indentations in the finish around its perimeter which may not be desirable.

For the history.

Here's the 5 string LH3 pickup measurements. All three coils (the J and both of the the MM pickup) are identical with some minor deviations.

R: 8.2kOhm ±0.1kOhm
L: 3.15H ±0.05H (measured with a cheap LCR meter).

As you see I have started my modding experiments. I have already tried adding a 1.5nF capacitor to the LH3 MM pickup in attempt to mimic EBMM sound, but I overshoot it (should have using 1nF cap instead). But the results were not bad. I will share the samples later.

Here is the work in process photos.

I was surprised to find out that the quad coil Nordstrand MM5.4 has specs very close to the original MM dual coil pickup. That means I should be able to voice it very close to the MusicMan Stingray (with the only limitation left being the pickup position and the EBMM 3EQ pre).

Here's my measurements.

Each coil
R: 4.18kOhm
L: 1.3H

Considering ditching the balance pot for a 3 position selector switch or a rotary switch. According to my calculations the stock 50k balance pot will kill all my attempts at making the Nordstrand MM pickup having the desired resonance peak, so it has to be either replaced with a 500k balance pot, or better removed entirely.

Here's a mock-up with the switch in place of the balance pot. What do people think?

Do what works for you and since the switch fits the existing balance control hole it's both non-destructive and fully reversible which makes it an easy thing to try and not impact any future value. I love the experimentation. And, if it hasn't been mention too much already, that body and finish are fantastic.

Way over my head but go for it sounds interesting. :)

Just picked up a used 55-01 as a project bass. My parts drawer has grown to where I have some pretty premium stuff sitting in there waiting for a bass to become a platform donor. In that collection of stuff I have a set of Aguilar Super Doubles and a Darkglass Tone Capsule that needed a home. Found this for a decent price and sometime next week I'll hopefully be swapping out the guts. Really looking forward to it. It's the first Lakland I have owned, though I've played many over the years. Anyway, I know it didn't happen unless I include a pic, so here's the proof.

Anything in particular I need to know about these outside of the electronics? This is an older MIK model.

a LOGer posted this awhile back, still a great clip to watch - see Uriah Duffy in action on his 55-94, but the whole band is amazing, thought I would re-share:

Thanks for re-sharing. I had not seen that. Good stuff! He's getting a lot more growl out of his bass than I get out of my 55-02. (Also, many better notes, but I know why that is...)

Thanks for sharing, that's an amazing performance.
I'll shameless plug the interview I did with him right after he published this video, and we talk about it, his work and his love of Lakland.
