Lakland Owners Group #69

Very recently joined your group! On a whim, I tried out a 1997 Osborn sig model (#97) and fell in love. Very comfortable and solid neck—though slightly thinner, it reminds me a lot of a fantastic 1964 Jazz neck I had to sell off not too long ago. This is seriously one of the nicest basses I’ve had the pleasure of owning. I think a 1966 Jazz will be up in the classifieds soon, no joke.

Welcome to our addiction!

Speaking of the JO necks, I have a 2001 and it is hands-down the best neck I've ever played. Does anyone know if that same neck shape is used on any of Lakland's p-basses? I'm thinking maybe a skyline 44-64 custom or the Duck Dunn model since they have a 1.5" nut, but I'm not sure how similar the rest of the shape is.

That is a killer looking bass! I have a much later JO and it’s the nicest bass I’ve had my hands on. Every JO I’ve touched has been a phenomenal instrument, far above my skill level for sure.

Ha! I hear you man. The JO is quite inspiring to play.

Thanks for the kind words.

While it presents well, it’s definitely been played with marks to prove just how much it’s been enjoyed over the years. I’m grateful there’s no temptation to treat it too gingerly 😅 Thanks for the warm welcome!

Very happy to post this, it’s been a long time coming (due to a build issue that Lakland sorted quickly). My new US Custom Dual J, stock other than:

- Chambered for weight-saving
- Pickups in series as default, push/pull pot to switch to parallel
- Laser-carve of my daughter’s name on the rear of the headstock.

Also pictured with my 2016 US Custom 44-PJ:

How does the Dual J tone compare to the typical JO or 44-60 JJ? Gemini AI is telling me the bridge pickup is close to the bridge on the dual J.

Dude! Congratulations! Well worth the wait and glad that Lakland sorted out any issues ahead of time. Absolutely love those colors and really dig that you have some really nice passive electronics appointments but in a modern day bass design. Looks perfect.

I just measured as best I can and both basses rear pickup (casing) is 28mm from the edge of the bridge.

When I spec’d and ordered the 44-PJ, I stated that it should be ‘60s spacing’, which is likely the only jig they use for J’s anyway, on account of the 44-60.

All that to say two things:

1) The tone is almost certainly the same as a 44-60 (other variables aside).

2) Absolutely never trust AI without verifiable sources.

Thanks, yeah I think they’re a cool pair! And yes, always passive!

Beautiful! love the body colour and nice laser etching too! Congrats!

The 55-01 came today. It's immaculate. Looks like a 2002 from the serial number. The neck needed al little relief but it was otherwise perfect. I tried out the stock electronics and a expected was underwhelmed. Aguilar Super Doubles and Darkglass Tone Capsule went right in. Took me a couple of hours between figuring out the pinouts and reinstalling everything, but she sounds phenomenal! Plays phenomenal too! As a nice little bonus, the previous owner had replaced the stock knobs with Sadowsky style Kilos and installed Dunlop strap lock pins. It's definitely a happy NBD!
