I got wild hair today and decided to make a couple of sets of knobs for my 55-01 and 55-02. I used a nicely grained piece of Cocobolo and brass rods to make the indicator dots. As beautiful as Cocobolo is, it is so dense and hard that my drill press had a very difficult time getting through it with my plug cutter. It also has odd voids and is very brittle due to the high hardness. I like the way that they turned out. I bored the hole for the pot a bit undersized so that I could avoid using a set screw. I had to gently open the bore by hand a bit so that the knobs would fit, but in the end they are nice and tight and there is no slippage. I really like the brass with the dark wood, its a nice, classy look. I was surprised how good the set on the 55-02 look with the cherry sunburst.

This was my first attempt at this. Now that I know exactly what to do, I'm looking forward to making more.

I think that I'm going to find a few nice pieces of wood and create a nice set of laminate knobs. Any suggestions would great.

I switched out a Hanson Vintage P for a Nordy P4 and kind of regret it. The Nordy sounds terrific but the Hanson had more.....More character. More authority. More "mojo". Again, YMMV.

I agree the Hanson Vintage P pickups sound excellent and definitely nail that old school vibe. They are well balanced and sit in the mix perfectly.

I see some changes coming on.....I have always heard great things about that particular bass (Tracey)... think you just need to break the PJ in for a bit....trust a fellow P lover...those other basses are cool BUT you may regret getting rid of a "great basic bass"...

Has anyone directly compared the Hanson P with a Fralin? I'm just smitten with the tone of my older Glaub with the Fralin- I even took it out and tried a handful of other P pickups I had around, and the Fralin in this bass just sounds phenomenal- perfect hollow-mid P tone with a ton of grind available at the top of the Tone control. The closest I've heard before besides on records of old P-basses is the Lollar P.

To be honest, I preferred the Fralin over the Hanson in my Laklands. Not that much of a difference, and I only have the Hanson P now. It's a little brighter to me, but I just roll off a little more from the tone knob... Of course, YMMV

Given how much I love this bass, I don't doubt I'll have some experience with a Hanson P sometime in the future, so this is good to know!

Actually I find the vintage Hanson very close to the Fralin ( that was their "target sound")

I had a 2002 BG4 with the fralin and loved the sound....I had to sell it ( unfortunately) when I got my US PJ5.....the Lakie PJ5 has a nice nordy in it but I missed the depth and fullness of the fralin..

Decided to get the Hanson vintage in my LOG bass and was very happily surprised at how much like a fralin it sounded to my ears....

Do....IMHO...they are very compatible sounding.
