Thanks for all the input guys! Here is a pic of the underside of the neck pup. I'm curious as to what the numbers represent, (58359), but I do believe they are Fralins.

I have to say, I'm extremely happy with this bass. It's all that of a passive Jazz and more. The neck is incredibly straight and I can get low, buzz-free action at 1mm G to 1.3mm E. Lower if you like a little buzz, and we all do at times, I just dig in.
I've had quite a few Jazz basses from many different builders. This Lakland tops em all, even the $2k Fender AV '74! (but I am partial to down-sized bodies, ;))

Aero's I've seen had dark red bobbins. These have no Aero logo. Likely not Aero's. Dunno what Fralins are supposed to look like.

DJ4's are great. Drop in a DJ-Retro preamp (not cheap, I know) and it takes it to a whole new. higher level. Good thing is that you can still go back to passive should you want it using a switch. I love mine.

I am seriously considering the DJ-Retro. Goes back to true-tone passive? If so, I'm savin'!
Does the DJ-Retro come with the appropriate knobs? Chrome or black?

I believe all of the -Retro's come with knobs as they are custom made for John East. The DJ-Retro appears to come with stacked chrome on top of black knobs: John East J Retro Preamp - Best Bass Gear

DJ Retro is only available in chrome on black stacked knobs on a chrome cover. Lakland supplies the cover plates for the preamps. It might be your bass needs minor work on the control cavity, the passive active switch needs some room. A sharp chisel, some patience and a steady hand does the job.

All you need to do is hookup the pickups to the screw terminals and solder the ground wires. Fitting the battery and wires in the cavity is a bit fiddly at times.

Upside, I sold the JoBo5 to a TX TBer. Nice meeting you Jim, thanks for lunch and the trip down this way. I had a hard time thinking of selling the JoBo, as its also the last of my rosewood board basses. So I'm all maple, ebony boards now. But though some may disagree here. After recently finding a Carvin SB5000, 3Tbrst/Maple w/TC-passive pull knob on Ebay with a pristine HS Carvin case n candy, at a very nice price. I doubt I'd ever pick up the JoBo5 again. So off she went.

But I declare now, I wont remain Lakland-less for too long. Always wanted to try a DJ5. And as much as I love my '08 Am St P5, cola/maple, I know how well Lakland builds their Fender copies, so maybe a Lakland P5 at some point.

Finally, I'd also like to try a new Lakin designed J bass. They making 5 stringers yet? So I'll prolly now be on the FS threads looking for a nice priced, 55-02D or DJ5 or other Skyline to get back in the LOGs' good-graces again. :smug:

As far as I know, no 5 string Lakins yet....."coming"....

Lakie P5s are awesome (I have 3).....and a DJ is nothing to sneeze at either (GREAT looking and sounding)....

I am sure this is a very short temporary venture... :)

My first DJ (White DJ4) came with a J-retro (ordered it that way) and I REALLY loved it...loved it SOoooooo much that when i sold it to buy a DJ5 i had the J-retro removed and installed in the DJ5.

The pre-amp does not "color" the Dj sound but enhances it...

Keep in mind that you have to tell East that you have a DJ (special control plate).....Do it!

Done! I ordered the DJ-Retro this morning, woohoo! Hope to be here by Friday.
I'm, really digging the DJ w/these DR strings., Should pass my Carvin as my #1 as soon as the DJ-Retro gets here... (I'm a nut for active tone and the Retro will bring it over the top I believe. This also has the best passive tone I've heard in a LONG time!
