Most likely not. I didn't. However there was a little back and forth with drawings and full size templates. In the end it was perfect. That said if all you're needing is a shock size replacement he may already have the right template. I recall my experience with Jeannies was less friendly with great concern about Korean vs Indo. So you'll want to confirm your version with whomever you get it from.
OK. I've got this terrible itch. Many of you are familiar with my highly modified 55-64 with them many chromey knobs. I put a small hole through the front in a very uncraftsmanly attempt to install a battery holder in the control cavity. Screw was just long enough to pierce the previously pristine front. I did my best to repair and cryogenic fill and polish and it's Ok but it bugs me. So I have been mulling a refinish. I came upon some nice work by TBer Streetscenes which got the fire lit. Then the next logical step is to add a J pickup and make it a PJ.
So it thinking on finding someone to rout the J cavity and the two current refin thoughts are both a large bass boat sparkle in either an Olympic White with the current tort PG or Lake Placid Blue with a custom white pearloid PG . I'm thinking a traditional color done in the sparkle is a fun contrast of traditional and wacky, keeping with the spirit of the current mods.
So tell me, who can anyone recommend to rout the pickup cavity? Does Lakland do such work? I am mulling doing it myself but probably best done by a pro.
Second, I'd love to also do a matching painted headstock, especially if I go with blue. Will Lakland sell a replacement headstock decal for a refin like this?
Lastly, I'm open to color ideas beyond what I proposed. Want to have some fun with this one.

Contact Pat Wilkins at Pat Wilkins Guitars and Finishing He may be able to do the route, he does have his own line of basses. He's also been known to finish a few Laklands in his time and has the decals.

I've owned both a 44-51 and 44-51M, both were great instruments. The 51 had a chunkier neck than the 51M and of course the slab body and single coil pickup.
I've owned a couple single coil P-type basses and if you are looking for more "thump", that would be the way to go compared to the split coil humbucker on the 51M. In terms of comparing the different makes, I would go with the Lakland any day if I were looking for a single coil P again.

On the 44-51 you had, did you notice that with the tone all the way open and plucked at the bottom of the neck it has an upright like tone? One time when I played it like that, I made an upright player double look because he was shocked as well.

Not surprising to me, seeing is that's what the original EB was designed to mimic (the DB)
Anything but what I did. Trust me, go to college, get a degree in science or engineering or something that pays well. Most of my life has been a struggle because of bad or hair-brained decisions. I've been very lucky to have the things that I do.
That's what sold me. I'm hoping all goes well and I can post my 2nd Lakland this weekend. Some times I wish I never would of played my first one. It makes most basses just seem unworthy.

A strange thing happened today. I left work geared up to by my 44-51 today. But for some reason I thought, "it's been a while so maybe you should stop by the store and play that bass one more time before pulling that money out the bank". And to my disbelief, I just wasn't feeling the tone. It had the same feeling in terms of playability, but the tone.... Man I was heartbroken. I've learned from losing thousands of dollars over the years that if I'm not 100% satisfied at time of purchase, there's no saving grace. I stayed there for a few hours playing different basses and going back to the 44-51. I just couldn't bond. I decided to wait a few weeks and try her again. But I did fall in love with something that knocked me off my feet (don't ask, just know she's beautiful all the way around). But at least I still have my JO.
