Agreed. If anyone else here wants to humor me with some more simple measurements for statistical data I'd be much obliged! I think pickups "center-to-center" seems the easiest. Also whether it is a Skyline or US model. For reference again, 70s spacing should be about 1/4" farther apart...
Fine, I'm leaving the office right now to go home and measure my DJ5. It sickens me to leave work this early on a sunny, beautiful Friday, but this needs to be put bed!
Its a pretty noticeable tonal difference, having owned multiple examples of Jazz basses with both 60s and 70s spacing. I am surprised at the resistance to simply figuring it out. If I could go to a store and measure myself I would, but unfortunately I don't know of a store locally that stocks Lakland. I've never considered buying a DJ because of the "70s spacing" thing, but would likely sell my Osborne for one assuming it played as well and had 60s spacing (as I much prefer the DJ aesthetic...)

How come my Osborne doesn't make me sound like Joe Osborne?In Lakland's defense, they do post extensive sound clip libraries of each model, so any tonal differences should be reflected there.
Just about any luthier is trained in carving bone nuts. I would start there.
My DJ5 is oficially just over 3-5/8" center to center on the pups. That's 92.458mm exact for those that prefer metric.
So, I'm declaring that the DJ5 is a 1966 spacing...not quite 60s, not quite 70s.

As stated previously, any good luthier can do a bone nut.
You can always have Carl Pedigo do the nut, J-retro etc at the same time

GREAT question.....if you figure that one out....let us all in on the secret.....
To match the black pickguard and mother of pearl inlay blocks on the fretboard, I made Ebony knobs with mother of pearl inlay dots. The pick doesn't pickup the pearl well, but it looks killer! My next mod will be to make a new black control plate.
Speaking of DJ's... Is there a way to tell the difference between a set of Aero pups and Fralins? Mine are supposed to be Fralins and have black/white cloth wires.
They sound very old-school, which is nice because my 2 other mains have a modern rock, Spector, and a HOT Jazz tone, Carvin.
That in itself makes believe they truly are Fralins with the classic, passive Jazz tone, (even with the DJ's 70's spacing,

IIRC, the Aeros will have a nice tight twist on the pick up wire, Fralins are not twisted from the factory. Also I think if you lift the pick up covers, Aeros have reddish insides, Fralins are black.
