Lately I've played a couple of rooms with my 55-01 where being able to switch the mid frequencies on the fly would have been helpful. Being that I have a Lakland version of the Bartolini NTMB in the 55-01 a mod is possible. So, today I took out the standard mid selector that came with the Lakland version and wired up a DPDT that was in my parts bin with a .1um and .33um capacitors scavenged from a old pedal that I had built, installed the needed jumpers and voila! Switchable mids! 250, 500 and 800Hz. Not the prettiest wiring job, but hey, they are used components. I put the switch in the same place as the coil splitter on a 55-02. The difference is very noticeable and I'm glad that I did it. Now I'm trying to figure how where I can place a DPDT on my 55-02 to do the same mod. I have a set of Chi-Sonics on the way for this bass so the sound will drastically change again in a few weeks.
If you have any NTMB, this is a simple mod that I really like. You don't realize the difference that mids make until you can easy change them on the fly. Being that the mids on the NTMB only have 13dB +/- at a fixed 250Hz this is part of what gives the Bart a dark sound. There are 15dB on the bass and 16dB on the treble respectively and if you do not have a selector already wired to the mids, you will remain dark. This mod made the pre much more usable and when on the 800Hz, with a bit of bass boost and mid boost reminds me of an LH3.

Just ordered a 55-01 au natural, hope it gets here by the weekend. I may need it!
Still digging my DJ4. I've been running it without the pg installed, and I love how it looks, especially with all of the exposed LPB

It's been an odd few days in my neck of the woods. I saw an elderly couple, both of whom were blind, white pole and all walking down the street, one leading the other. Literally, the blind leading the blind.
There was also a local headline that that said "Woman steals from church parking lot and runs over blind bicyclist".

Dropped my 55-64 off at the tech's today. Getting the J pup installed!
I don't think you'll be disappointed. You still retain all the original P bass ability if needed but the J in the position you'll place it brings a noticeable degree of brightness and opens the entire sound up.

Bringing these two Carlos to the studio on Sunday! Jazzy R&B stuffs. This is the first project where I will get to see these two just absolutely shine! I like my Ash/Maple Lakie with singles for most of the stuff I do at church and such, but having this low B and humbuckers just kills! Will post samples when we get done!
