I just received a 44-14 - serial # 440027. It's Candy Apple Red with a maple fingerboard.
Had a rehearsal today and used it in passive mode - it has a nice "splat" to it.
Still working on getting used to the active set-up.
Not sure if Laklands are like Fenders where you can tell if the bass has "got it" or not.
Maybe Laklands all "have it"? This is my first one.
I think she's a keeper!

I installed ChiSonics in my 55-01 with the US Bartolini 918F NTMB pre. This my second set of ChiSonics, the first was installed into a passive JO4 which I regret selling because the ChiSonics were so incredible.
First off, the ChiSonic is IMHO one of the most amazing pickups on the market, regardless of if the bass is active or passive. If you have played a passive ChiSonic and like the sound, they have the same sound in a passive system when the controls are set flat, which is fantastic the way. Putting them in an Active system simply makes them a force to be reckoned with. The Chi's with the neck solo'd are a warm, velvety PBass on steroids. Not a pure P sound, but a thicker more powerful P sound. When blended you have a thick warm sound that is very responsive to your attack. If you dig in, you get great aggressive tones. The bridge pickup is warm but still has that quacky sound that is great for fingerstyle. I installed a mid switch on my 55-01 so that I could switch from 250-500-800Hz on the fly and the Chi's are very responsive to the switch and the mid control.
I had a 4hr show last night and used this 55-01 exclusively playing classic country and a bit classic rock. This was already one of my favorite basses, but the Chi's really made this a stellar instrument. I can't think of a style that this bass can't cover.

As far as your comment goes, I would just say the percentage of Laklands that have "it", is significantly higher than Fender.
Thanks - I wasn't sure what to expect, as I had never even played a Skyline before. It's a really nice instrument.
Does Lakland engineer/design their own pickups? They have the Lakland badge on the pick up cover. Or do they put their badge on another company's pickups?
I think in 2007 or 2008 the switched to manufacturing their own pups. They are a fantastic product with a very unique voice.
They really do - I have some fun tone exploration to do with the active system.
I'm used to a standard J-bass width. This feels a bit wider? Just taking a bit to get used to.

Dan...are the pickups still Barts?
If so you may want to change them out to the Hanson/LH3 pickups...This may be what you are looking for.
I emailed Leo and there is a chance my bass doesn't make the December cut.

I am awaiting a new bass as well...A Carlo so...not a Lakie but built by the master....so I know all about waiting....and waiting.....but the wait is ALWAYS worth it for a Carlo or a Lakie!
congrats on a "KEEPER!"....once you get used to the tonal variety the LH3 system gives you I doubt you will use it in passive (unless the battery dies) again

its a "tweener" neck....(that is what we call it)....a bit wider than a J neck for sure...1.62" if i remember correctly.
Yes, I know about waiting as well. My Carlo was almost 2 years from dream to fruition....stupid Mahogany drought! Gosh. So worth it though!

Thanks - It was actually a Sweetwater demo that I got in exchange for a Mesa Strategy that I have nothing nice to say about.
The bass just feels "right" and sounds just as "right".
What was weird was I had two different sets of Ernie Ball Cobalts (50-105) unravel on me when I restrung the bass - one at the D peg and one at the G.
Bad run of strings? Who knows.
