I think the spalted grain with an unlined ebony board would look fantastic.

No issues with lines, just thinking in terms of aesthetics in the case above. There's a lot going on visually with the spalt in that bass and having no lines would set it off nicely :)

So I sold an 55-02 with Barts and already want to get another one but money is tight so I'm looking at a 55-01 from Sweetwater. I know it's probably been discussed to death but how much of a downgrade in sound am I going to hear? What is the thing I'm going to miss the most from the 02. Are the pups/pre more noisy than the 02, thinner sounding? Exactly what is the tonal minus in that model, I know there is less options without the ability to toggle the big humbucker, but I pretty much just left it with both coils on anyway. The build quality is the same. Thoughts? Thanks in advance, Jim

Don't view the price as an indication of inferiority. There are many here who love their -01 basses, some more than than their -02's. Do some searches on YouTube and you'll hear what it sounds like, but more importantly, look at the classifieds here and at places like eBay and craigslist. Most of the time you can find an -01 for $500-$700 if you keep an eye out.

I've been thinking about making a custom lakland for a long time now. trying to decide on body wood and fret board. Two of my favorite players right now are Justin chancellor ( TOOL) and ben kenney ( Incubus). I know Justin's basses are way more complicated then just woods. I was thinking body wood- mahogany or walnut, and fretboard- ebony fretted or rosewood. would love to hear opinions on the characteristics of those body woods for people who have played those combos especially lows/mids/highs

Isn't that the one made for Duck Dunn? If so, it may be the only one in existence. His son is the caretaker of the basses, and I don't expect it to be let go now that Duck has passed on, though you probably know that given the small red 4 in the image, which is from an article where I learned that tidbit. You could always pick up a Skyline DD signature model and have the body stripped and poly'd...

I didn't reply to this the first time you posted it because I have no valuable input to your request, and since nobody else did either I would assume the same is true for the rest of the LOG members. That being said, there are a lot of discussions available on the internet for selecting woods for instruments. I'd start there and then you can make an informed decision. Most of the basses Lakland produces are Swamp Ash or Alder, and the boards are all rosewood or maple, with the few ebony exceptions here and there. If there are any Mahogany or Walnut bodies out there for Laklands, I would guess they're a really small population and not likely to be represented by the general populace on this forum. Thanks for the info! I wish there were more ever produced ! I have seen some white ones in the past here, but did not catch them on time! I would prefer a natural colour myself! I had a skyline before and sold it recently. I want the US version.

Dippin my toe back into the Lakland pool! Got this Skyline Joe Osborne on trial. It has stock Lakland pickups and a J Retro pre (more on that later)

Decided to a/b it against my favorite (sorta) Jazz, my Dingwall Super J/P4.

Ill start off by saying I've never owned a straight Jazz bass in my life, and I'm pretty old! Always been more on the P bass side of things. Though I appreciate folks like Will Lee, Marcus, Geddy, Jaco, none of those guys have the tone I personally gravitate toward. Lately I've been thinking I should give one a chance and traded an amp for this Lakland. Anyway, here's the skinny so far.

NECK- I'm not super fussy about necks and so far the JO neck is pretty good. Not amazing, but not bad at all.

Balance and feel of the instrument is quite good.

PICKUPS/ELECTRONICS- if I keep this bass, I'll probably swap out the pickups eventually. They don't suck, but from what I've been listening to, I'm thinking of a few different things. Mainly Chi-Sonics or Fender Custom Shop 60's. Open to other ideas for sure. Regarding the J Retro pre. I've always hated active electronics. The Aggie OPB-1 in my Dingwall is just beyond awful to me. Fortunately, that bass sounds fantastic passive. The J a Retro is an altogether different beast. So far I think it's terrific. Where the OPB-1 takes all the punch out of my bass, the J Retro adds punch, and I love me a punchy bass :)

The strings on my Dingwall are kinda dead so it's tough to do a true shootout. At least they're the same strings on both basses (DR SS LO Riders 45-105).

I'm really shocked how well the Skyline is comparing to my Dingwall which is considerably more expensive. Like, way more expensive!

Gonna try it on a gig tonight to confirm whether it's a keeper, but so far I'm optimistic :)
