Ill start off by saying I've never owned a straight Jazz bass in my life, and I'm pretty old! Always been more on the P bass side of things. Though I appreciate folks like Will Lee, Marcus, Geddy, Jaco, none of those guys have the tone I personally gravitate toward. Lately I've been thinking I should give one a chance and traded an amp for this Lakland. Anyway, here's the skinny so far.

NECK- I'm not super fussy about necks and so far the JO neck is pretty good. Not amazing, but not bad at all.

Balance and feel of the instrument is quite good.

PICKUPS/ELECTRONICS- if I keep this bass, I'll probably swap out the pickups eventually. They don't suck, but from what I've been listening to, I'm thinking of a few different things. Mainly Chi-Sonics or Fender Custom Shop 60's. Open to other ideas for sure. Regarding the J Retro pre. I've always hated active electronics. The Aggie OPB-1 in my Dingwall is just beyond awful to me. Fortunately, that bass sounds fantastic passive. The J a Retro is an altogether different beast. So far I think it's terrific. Where the OPB-1 takes all the punch out of my bass, the J Retro adds punch, and I love me a punchy bass :)

The strings on my Dingwall are kinda dead so it's tough to do a true shootout. At least they're the same strings on both basses (DR SS LO Riders 45-105).

I'm really shocked how well the Skyline is comparing to my Dingwall which is considerably more expensive. Like, way more expensive!

Gonna try it on a gig tonight to confirm whether it's a keeper, but so far I'm optimistic :)

Congrats, Mark! The Dingwall comparison is high praise, I've tried a couple and they were awesome.

Check the Lakland site for clips, that's the best tonal comparison you'll get outside of trying both yourself. Invalid Link Removed

Hi, Does anyone know if this bass is still in production its a Skyline 44-60 Custom. I can only find one online.

Sorry... Can't truly help but I love my furniture basses... I have a Carl Pedigo built 5: string with a bubinga top and ebony fretboard and can say it has a nice "snap" to it... There's is a crispness but found in either rw or maple...

I also have a 5576 with an ebony neck... Same thing...ebony ads a bit of nice zing when fretted

Really nice... There are a few US models out there... I saw one that was sent to John mcvie... Hand rubbed oil ( no other finish) that was gorgeous..

One of these days I'll get one like that... On the list...

I think you are correct.... I did contact Mr Dunn (son) to see if we could arrange an auction... Because I know his wife was raising money for a charity when he passed away..

The LOG donated summer money....

im really thinking mahogany and ebony. I want to find out how the lows, mids, and highs sound with that combination though. do you think it would be brighter, bigger sounding than my ash/rosewood skyline Osborn?
