Got a pickguard from Lakland a few weeks ago and some new knobs. I have not used any of my other basses for a while, it's a keeper for sure!!

I have a question for 44/55-02 owners. I have two 44-02s; a 2005 that came stock with the Bartolini pickups, and a 2006 that had the Lakland\Hanson but there was a dead spot so I replaced the pickups with some Delanos. The Barts are too dark and the Delanos are too bright. My first experience with the LH pickups when Lakland first switched to them was good, they sounded very blah to me. Maybe they have changed since then, maybe that one was screwed up.
What is your personal opinion of the LH pickups? Do they have a little more attack than the old Barts, and does the neck pickup soloed sound good to you?

On laklands facebook its says he tried a skyline and loved it, but they are also making him a US version. I wonder if he uses flats or rounds. I just saw them last night at Outside Lands in SF. They were amazing and that was the best band mix I've ever heard at a festival. It was insanely loud and you could hear every instrument so detailed. The bass and drum tones were insane
I find the LH3 definately has more attack and is brighter to me.
I've owned both and prefer the lh3 over the barts.
When you say "Dead spot" what do you mean? If it is a note on the fretboard that typically has nothing to do with the pickups.
I know on the 5 stringers some people complain about a weak A string but I have not had that issue.

Had an intimate Friday evening with my 55-01. A little quality time spent putting a new preamp in. It already had Nordy Fat Stacks when I bought it but the consensus is the oem preamp is the weak link on these so I've been itching to do something about that.
A few weeks ago the battery clip disintegrated...perfect excuse to dig in and just pull out the whole stock pre and get ready for a new one. As I mentioned earlier in the thread, I acquired two preamps. I got a great deal on a Mike Pope Flexcore here on the boards and also a nice price on a new Glockenklang. One each for my 55-01 & 55-02.
Decided to put the Glockenklang in the 55-01. This unit requires some soldering. The modules are connected but you have to tie in the jack, battery lead, ground and the pickups. Armed with a good soldering iron and an iron will I got it all hooked up and installed tonight.
The results are great! A silent, powerful unit that is very transparent as promised. Also I was pleasantly surprised to find that it has a nice passive tone control! I didn't remember reading that passive tone was a feature.
Anyway, it hits all the right buttons and is a pretty significant improvement over the MK1.
Next... the Mike Pope pre goes into my #1, the 55-02. The LH3 pre is on the block with the stock pots and knobs if anyone is interested.
The Lakeland pickups are staying in for now. I don't know if it's the same problem that @socialleper has experienced but I do notice a dead area on the neck pickup between the split coils that is only a problem when bending the A string toward the treble side of the neck when you're above about the 10th fret. Not a real significant issue and I like the pickups pretty well otherwise.

By dead spot and mean the D string was always a little more quiet than the rest despite a complete setup.
My 5502d has developed a "dead spot" on the A string. It just happened though back about 3 months ago. It wasn't always like this.
It's the pickups for sure, but what is reallllly odd is that it is BOTH of them. They are both noticeably quieter on the a string. Less attack when thumped or picked.
It's even easy to see, just by recording the picking of each string into your DAW and look at the waveform/levels.
It almost sounds like a "mWaaah" sound. Where there is no "attack", it actually seems to get louder AFTER you hit the string, like some limiter is in use. Heh.
I'm just happy that other people have similar issues. No, not happy you have an issue, happy I'm not crazy and imagining it =)
I tried out another 44-02 today and was unimpressed with the LH pickups. It was a 2014 and the body was a little heavier than my 2006 or 2005. The strings were a little dead, but there still wasn't anything there to make me want to get them. I love the design of the 44-02 but it seems like getting the right pickups that take full advantage of the J\MM design is a challenge.
I've also noticed that Lakland like to set their preamps up loud. Every Skyline I've ever tried was way louder than any other bass.
For those who have TI Jazz Flats on a 5501, does the JF345 set fit thru-body, or is JF365 a better choice?
Hmm... Not sure about that... Maybe depends on the person doing the set up?
Carl says the specs are NOT to set it up too "hot"....
Hey all, i'm looking at potentially getting a 55-64, but the pickup location has me scratching my head. Is the pickup in the same location relative to it's scale length as a normal P bass? It seems strange to move the pickup farther up the neck, as it's already in a pretty good spot.
Damn, Colin has some great taste. It'll be interesting to see if he uses it live at all, as he's been using his cream '73 P almost exclusively since OK Computer.

Agreed. Both 55-02Ds I had, I turned down the preamp a bit and it really makes the Preamp/PickUp system come to life so you can take full advantage of all the options it has to offer.
I wouldn't string it through the body, but if you must do so, get the longer set.
