Lakland Owners Group #69

I posted about gasing for a 55-01 but it hasn't got any traction so far. I'll ask here.

This bass is on my radar. I want to jump into the 5-string world. I like what I have read about the 35" scale and the low B. The 01 models have Bartolini pickups and eq and the 02 has Lakland. I don't see a lot of difference outside of that, but the 02 is $400-ish more. What am I missing there?

A bit late to the party, but I'll agree that as others have said the 55-01 is a fine instrument stock, but is a completely different animal than the 55-02 which does sound a bit better (to my ears) and is more versatile. As has been said, the weakest link is probably the preamp. had a 55-01 and it was my only 5 stringer and main player for a few years. Never felt that it let me down in any way. I eventually turned it all-passive with a set of Chi-Sonics and it was also good sounding, but not as good sounding as the Carlo (basically a 4-94 with 35", modfied neck profile and different wood choices) that ended up supplanting it. Also, mine was an early'ish MIK that was gorgous, but quite heavy.

I ended up putting the 55-01 back stock and selling it and the chi-sonics.

I spoke at length to Carl Pedigo about the 55-01 and he said that guys are always swapping pup's and pre's on these but the most common arrangement they settle on is the stock Korean MK1 pickups with a new pre, most often the Lakland LH series.

So do with that what you will. One thing I would put out there is that it if you do end up swapping in a new pre, it might be worthwhile trying out the addition of a series-parallel switch. You rarely hear about guys doing this on 55-01's, but I've got a S/P switch on a J-bass that has Dimarzio Model J's (basically J split like a P). It's a really usefull mod that introduces a very nice alternate tone and just about the cheapest electronics mod you can do to a bass.

Interesting, every time I've tried they insist that they do not sell pickguards.

Also, I would suggest Pickguardian. I have bought from Mike Quick more than once and his stuff is nice but - the number of times I have emailed him repeatedly to try and order something and he NEVER responds to me outnumbers my number of actual purchases. He could have had a lot more money from me but he doesn't respond to emails. I'm done with that.
Another vote for Tony Dudzic (sp?) at pickguardian... great guy to work with!! I'll be hitting him up again, for the 4the time in a few weeks!
