Was wondering if anyone has fitted a Sadowsky preamp on a DJ plate? Of course it would likely call for a battery box to be routed. (not just route out under the pickguard) It looks like the 3-knob may be doable, but not the 4-knob (w/VTC) given the VTC and B/T stack don't look like they'd make the curve.

Just thinking out loud. Outboard should be here this Thursday.

I've been using an MXR M81 that I really love. It can get very close to the Sadowsky Preamp tone and is incredibly versatile. Because of this outboard pre, I'm using my active basses less and less. It's fantastic.

Doing this will not get you a 55-02 tone. You will get some nice tones, don't get me wrong, but they will be variations on jazz sounds, thick and thin.

Ok....so I finished up setting up the bass how I like it. I put a fresh set of Lakland knobs on it and I just stuck aged ivory vinyl inlays on it. She sure looks pretty now! I think I might eventually put in 3 way switches on each of the pups, but for now I'm done messing with it.

Carl wasn't familiar with Luminlay, but he does have his own solution, which is similar. He said it's easy enough to do, but if it's replacing existing dots, sometimes you'll have a "shadow" if the drilling out isn't done just right (which is difficult).

He also (again) mentioned how much he likes the DR Long Neck strings and how they fit thru body Laklands like they were designed too.

Thanks Doug! Sad outboard should be here Thursday. Will get some time to check it out before service on Sunday. I did notice that I like the passive tone better in my BG250/VL110 rig at church than the BG250/HT112 at home. I think it's the forward mids in the Bergantino.

You could also try the Aguilar DB924. It's the Aguilar OBP-1 in a box. Sounds great too!

Just to make things even more difficult, did you consider the DJ-Retro preamp by John East? That's what I have in my DJ4. Really great sounding preamp: boost only bass, cut&boost treble, cut&boost mids w/ sweep, pull bright pot, active passive switch. Comes mounted on a curved Lakland plate. Battery fits in the control cavity. It's the bee's knees!

I had one in a JO5 back in the day. Really nice preamp and I like it being onboard! Just not ready to make the $300 jump + shielding, so figured using an outboard first may do it for me. (and wanted to try a Sadowsky pre with the DJ5)

I found one of the older style Sadowsky outboard preamps on the 'bay and it'll be here this week. It doesn't have a clip, so I'm going to try and find one or rig something so that I can clip it to my music stand or strap. Kind of a PITA to adjust if laying on the floor since they have me in a stool onstage.
