Does anyone know how the paint on these deluxe models are applied? Is it applied directly to the top wood or on the base lacquer?
Reason for the question is I'm on the quest of having my 2002 55-94 deluxe refinished to a different colour. I have been in contact with a respectable luthier local to me and he asked this question.

Well I'm probably wrong, but I'd guess to the lacquer. I got a ding on the back of my 55-94 and it went through to the wood, while not being that deep.

Hello LOG'rs,After having a 55-02 D for a year, I found myself missing the straight up single coil jazz bass sound. So I sold my 55-02 with the intention of getting a JO5 or DJ5. I missed a couple in the classifieds, but while searching on local Craigslist I saw a DJ5 with a J Retro. Today I brought her home
Used her at rehearsal tonight

Sure, no problem! My #1 is a surf green 44-64, RW board with abalone blocks, 1.625" nut width, cream pearloid (mother of toilet seat
) guard, built in 2011. The "vintage" Hanson P pickup (no neodymium magnet like the standard one) can get aggressive when I dig in, yet old-school with a light touch. Light with the absolute perfect neck for me.I also have a 44-64/Duck Dunn (built in 2006, before they called them 44-64s, and it also has a jazz-width neck like a Duck), in shoreline gold with a maple board with loads of birdseye, black blocks, a one-ply black guard and a Dark Star pickup. Again, light (around 8 lbs.), and very resonant. Bought this one used. Love the sound of the DS, but the standard P pickup is the best tonal fit for the original rock band I'm in. I need to string this one with flats (it has nickel rounds right now) and study up on Jamerson with it.
Finally, I picked up a 2010 US Decade with Chi-sonics, originally spec'd by a Lakland Owners Group friend. Root-beer sparkle finish (sometimes referred to here as "Markus sparkle turd"
) with a jazz-width neck, RW board, pearloid blocks and white binding, and a black guard. A little heavier (9--ish, I'd guess), with lots of tonal versatility.Honestly, they're all gems! No pics as I'm at work and Photobucket has turned to a pay model.
They sound great. I was originally looking for a 44-60 to contrast with the Precision I use now. So my idea was to get the custom 44-64 PJ to keep the solid P thump but be able to dial in some Jazz tone at times. I'll see how that works out or if I end up GASing for a 44-60 anyway. I'll post a pic when it shows up next week.
