Now I can't stop thinking about a 44-60 or maybe a 55-60. Darn, these Laklands seem to be more addicting than chocolate.

It's rosewood. This bass began life as a used, stock Skyline 55-01 that I got for a ridiculously low price. I swapped the stock pickups for US Bart MK models and then sent it to Lakland's Chicago office and had them install an LH-3 preamp and swap the stock neck for the fretless one.
Addendum: In the time since taking the above photo, I've added a ramp between the pickups.

Me and my '03 55-01. Nordstrand Big Splits and 3b-5b preamp. Figured walnut ramp and knobs.

It's a beautiful bass... hard to imagine a 55-94 looking better than this.Wow! Very nice! Congrats!!
It also sounds and plays great BTW. HUGE low B with a fundamental so pure it sounds like a synthesizer. Can't wait to get these clanky little boy strings off and put something thicker and a little less bright.
The neck feels great. It almost feels like there's no finish on it at all. The only thing I notice is that the neck joint isn't as lock tight as my custom shop Warwick, but it's a pretty minor point on an amazing bass!

Who all is using thicker (than stock) strings on their 55-02/55-94? Stock strings are D'Addario Super Long nickel 045, .065, .080, .100, .130, right?
I got some Elixir "stainless steel" .045 .065 .085 .105 .135 strings to replace the stock strings on my 55-02. The Elixirs feel pretty good but their midrange is not even close to being as rich as the stock strings. They also have less high end and presence than the stock nickels, which is unexpected.
Any thoughts?

I don't think those gauges are the reason. The biggest difference is that Elixers are coated strings. I personally prefer uncoated strings.
