I got some Elixir "stainless steel" .045 .065 .085 .105 .135 strings to replace the stock strings on my 55-02. The Elixirs feel pretty good but their midrange is not even close to being as rich as the stock strings. They also have less high end and presence than the stock nickels, which is unexpected.

Any thoughts?

I'm not a big fan of Elixirs. The coating makes them last longer, but also makes them sound duller to my ears. I also think they feel flabby. I much prefer 45-130 DR Sunbeams or Pure Blues. I've had good luck with both of those and they seem to last for a good amount of time. I have also used and like S.I.T. Power Nickels 45-130. Of course your mileage may vary depending on your usage.

Yea they sure sound dull to my ears too.

Perhaps not as big of a deal if you're playing live through an amp, but it's very noticeable when playing through a clean DI in a recording studio. The midrange is not even close to as rich as the D'Addario XL Nickels that are stock on the 55-02.

Lol I bought 2 pairs and put the other one on my Warwick, so that's $80 down the tube :spit:

I've been through a "test everything there is" a few years ago ... I keep coming back to D'Addario EXL-170 (45-130) strung through bridge.

In the big picture of things (versatily, price, sound, durability) to my ears, taste and playing style they came out best.


That being said: I have them on a 55-94 and a 55-60 but my 55-64 isn't "there" yet - maybe I need to embark on another string-journey ;-)

I love the Pure Blues .. great strings. I use them and Dunlop's ... I think I will give some XLs a shot. My 55-01 has become my favorite bass. I really dig the Lakland bodies and necks.

Since Jeannies are out of business, the best way is to check with your local luthier and let him copy your original pickguard. I have never had luck with Lakland directly.

I've alswsys had Lakland's in my stable. I currently have a 98' 494 in shoreline gold (with aeros pups and a nordstrand pre) that absolutely kills!!! My go to bass for decade was a 99' 5595 deluxe with 3t burst and rosewood. I reluctantly sold it 5 years ago for several reasons. I should have never sold it as I now dearly regret it. I mean, it was my number one for so long. Nonetheless, I've been searching for a new 5 string #1. I found this. Its a 01' 5594. Super excited to have another lakland 5.

Glad you bought that one before I got im trouble. Some great figuring on that bass. Enjoy it!

Nice one!!!

Luckily I was able to recapture 2 favs that got away.... Ended up selling one... But kept the other ( after a few years being apart...I will never let Tabby go again!)
