Lakland Owners Group #69

After owning my DJ5 for several months I gotta say I really enjoy everything about this bass. Neck is great, weight is great, playability top notch and I love the 35” scale. I picked up one of the new Sadowsky preamps and have been running through that and the tone is glorious! I’ve played it now at multiple gigs with the band and it always gets the job done. On occasion I play at my church and the sound crew really loves the tone of the DJ. I have included MD’s IEM mix from one of our services from a couple weeks back. The Lakland sounds really good through the IEM’s and kills in the FOH mix. Signal chain is bass>Sadowsky>Avalon pre to FOH.

Has anybody else had issues with their A string on the 55-02? The volume level of the string seems ok to me, but the pickups aren't translating touch harmonics that are audible when playing unplugged...


That's because of the split between the 2 and 3 could on the pickups.

It seems to be more prominent on she basses for some reason..

I don't really know if a " fix".... Sorry

I actually talked to Lakland today about this (and another (easily fixable) problem that exists on my bass). They said that they will send out a replacement set of pickups that is single coil in the neck (as opposed to dual coil stock) and dual coil in the bridge (as opposed to stock quad coil). The new pups will supposedly completely cover the A string with the downside of possibly introducing hum at certain settings.

I had these pickups on my 55-94 and they are very nice and punchy sounding, with no issues on the A string.

They are single coils though, so yes, hum can be an issue.

Does anybody know why Lakland uses 50K blend pots? They said that is the stock pot value, which is really odd since 250K or 500K are normally used. I'm installing Delano pickups and don't want to use something suboptimal either for the LH-3 OR the Delanos.

If this schematic is accurate (I'd assume it to be, as it's from lakland's site), then they have both PUs fed into the blend pot first, and then into the volume. It'd stand to reason then that you'd want to minimize the resistance of the blend pot, to prevent signal loss from the PUs to the output.

Keep in mind that I am a simple country boy before reading my forthcoming explanation.

For bass applications, I've always read that 25K and 50K blends are more appropriate for active pickups whereas 250k and 500k are appropriate for passive pickups. AFAIK, the stock 55-02/55-94 pickups are passive yet 50K is used. The common knowledge is that lower pot values will cause more treble to go to ground, and hence 500k and higher are employed to help open up the tone of a circuit that is perceived to be too dark [my own listening suggests that a 500k pot also helps reduce congestion in the midrange as well]

One thing is for sure...there is a huge difference in volume between passive and active mode on my 55-02...passive is much quieter.
