Lol, not a silk thing. Just an observation to tie back into the theme of this thread, which is these wonderful Lakland basses. Those ebony blocks in the BEM fretboard are hot!

Been slowly blacking out the hardware on my spalted maple 55-02. Looks much better IMO than all the glitzy shiny chrome that comes stock. Also did a nerve wracking mod to the headstock in order to install genuine USA Hipshot ultralites. Required careful use of a step bit and a drill to go one notch bigger in the hole on the back of the headstock.

Does anyone else find the LH-3 system to be sorta meh in passive mode but really come alive with the preamp engaged?

Just engaging the preamp on my 55-02 seems to bring out detail and make the lows more defined. Then add a dash of bass boost and 1/4 tsp treble boost and it really starts to sing.

This is making me consider experimenting with some different pickups. The best pickups I have heard recently are...Delano. Any experience with Delanos on a Lakland?

I thought the passive mode on Lakland basses don’t work if there’s no battery? I recall it was there as an option rather than fail safe so the circuitry doesn’t work without a battery even in passive.

The passive mode does work without a battery...

It imparts a large stamp on the 55-02's tone, but I like that stamp. At some point I'm going to run this bass passive into some outboard preamps and see if they float my boat even more.

What's your favorite out of those with Lakland passive pickups?

I have not played Lakland pickups. With Darkstars or Fralins I like the medium tension and feel of the JO's and the Sadowky Blues.

My 2013 55-60 Skyline Custom arrived today. I’m changing the white pick guard to either brown tort or black (both on order). I’m putting on some LaBella flats. It sounded pretty good with the old rounds on it.

Nice! That’s what I have (but with maple fretboard). I have a thick single ply tort pickguard, from pickguardian - so that’s my vote!

OK. Quick Guards sent me 5-6 templates to see which one fit my 55-60. I didn't know that, based on the region it was manufactured, the pick guard is silently different. My bass was a 2013/Indonesia model (ie. template #2).

I also have an extra matte black guard for my 55-60. 2012 Indonesian Skyline.. I’d send it for a shipping label - PM me if interested.

After owning my DJ5 for several months I gotta say I really enjoy everything about this bass. Neck is great, weight is great, playability top notch and I love the 35” scale. I picked up one of the new Sadowsky preamps and have been running through that and the tone is glorious! I’ve played it now at multiple gigs with the band and it always gets the job done. On occasion I play at my church and the sound crew really loves the tone of the DJ. I have included MD’s IEM mix from one of our services from a couple weeks back. The Lakland sounds really good through the IEM’s and kills in the FOH mix. Signal chain is bass>Sadowsky>Avalon pre to FOH.
