Hello all.
Today was a dnbd, disappointing new bass day.
I bought a used Skyline 44-60 from GC and got the email it arrived yesterday. the bass looked mint in the photos and was owned by a member here at one time. I went to GC to pick it up today and we opened the box. The bass was in quite possibly the worst gig bag I have ever seen, looked like an old Members only jacket that we couldn't get the zipper unzipped. The bag without the bass cannot stand on its own, it is also very dirty. After seeing this I was anxious about what was inside, The bag really didn't bother me it was just amusing and almost foreshadowing. Out comes the bass. First thing I see is all knobs are loose from the body one is not connected and floating in the garbage gig bag. Scratches and chips all over the body. There is a ton of Pick scratches above the pickguard and the strings were loosened to the point of unwinding. Ok we get it all back together and the action is skyhigh, Bass was also filthy.
I take it home and lower the action and plug it in. The pick ups are super noisy, this is my first jazz bass so not sure what level of noise is acceptable. Next the knobs don't shut off the volume even turned down all the way the it still can be played and heard. The bass has very heavy guage strings, so it feels very dead to me.
I will probably return it, might try lighter strings but not sure if the other thing are normal or not. Maybe I'm not meant to be a jazz bass guy
Sorry for the rant
