Lakland Owners Group #69

Oh my oh my!!!

Awesome collection sir!!!!

Just curious why 2 AJs???

I'll send you a number tomorrow... List is on my laptop..

Thanks. As far as why 2 AJs, I had the gray one first and got the red one on a sweetwater closeout for a deal I couldn't pass up.

Been seriously considering trying to trade my blue dj5 for one of older korean 5502s with the barts.....

Hello all.
Today was a dnbd, disappointing new bass day.
I bought a used Skyline 44-60 from GC and got the email it arrived yesterday. the bass looked mint in the photos and was owned by a member here at one time. I went to GC to pick it up today and we opened the box. The bass was in quite possibly the worst gig bag I have ever seen, looked like an old Members only jacket that we couldn't get the zipper unzipped. The bag without the bass cannot stand on its own, it is also very dirty. After seeing this I was anxious about what was inside, The bag really didn't bother me it was just amusing and almost foreshadowing. Out comes the bass. First thing I see is all knobs are loose from the body one is not connected and floating in the garbage gig bag. Scratches and chips all over the body. There is a ton of Pick scratches above the pickguard and the strings were loosened to the point of unwinding. Ok we get it all back together and the action is skyhigh, Bass was also filthy.
I take it home and lower the action and plug it in. The pick ups are super noisy, this is my first jazz bass so not sure what level of noise is acceptable. Next the knobs don't shut off the volume even turned down all the way the it still can be played and heard. The bass has very heavy guage strings, so it feels very dead to me.
I will probably return it, might try lighter strings but not sure if the other thing are normal or not. Maybe I'm not meant to be a jazz bass guy

Sorry for the rant
joe
Oh man I'm sorry. I own a USA 4460 classic in tobacco burst. It's by far the nicest Jazz type bass I've played and I've owned/played them all. I'm sorry I heard from more than one credible source the skyline 4460's are exceptional, enough so that people prefer taking those to gigs and leaving their US made stuff at home for recording and practicing only out of fear of sweat damage/theft etc. They are that highly thought of for live sound and comfort. It has to be a crappy set up and maybe damage. It shouldn't be that noisy. I have single coils in mine and their is hum when I roll off one pickup but that's to be expected I have true single coils and nothing sounds as clear as they do. But buzzing, no that's something else wrong with the jack or something

Thanks for the reply.
I just got back from returning the bass to GC. While waiting to do the paperwork the tech and I started to look the bass over and started noticing more issues than I saw at home. Someone sanded the down the neck where it joins the body, Making the fretboard very low at the higher notes and on a downward angle towards the headstock. I changed strings and lowered the action and no matter what the action was very high at the upper frets, like it needed a shim to compensate for what was sanded. The noise and the not being able to mute the knobs was icing on the cake. The bass sounded and felt terrible no matter what I tried.
I'm sure most of the problems were caused by the previous owner, but now I think I am going to buy a cheap jazz bass and enjoy my USA 4-94, Which at this point I have tried over 50 basses and none compere. I am looking now at a Cort jazz bass that looks pretty nice and is cheap.

Thanks Again
Joe

I think he got one that was abused..

Hi! Long time US Hollowbody owner, first time poster....

I just placed an order for a Custom 44-51. It will have the pickup placed at the neck like a 70's Tele Bass. Trying to decide on a Novak recreation of the Fender Humbucker that came on those or a BiSonic/Dark Star. Any suggestions?

Also just picked up a second hand Hollowbody30.

Chisonic humbucker

I wish I had the budget to do a US 4451 Custom but I don’t. Here is what I’m thinking... I want a 4451 platform with 2 Chisonic singles... one at the neck and one in the P spot wired VVT.. almost like a reversed J setup I guess. I thought about getting a Skyline 4451, but I would have to take theneck off for truss rod adjustments which I really dislike. What do you guys think?

If you place the neck pickup at the end of the truss adjustment route, you’ll still have room to adjust the truss. The only issue I foresee is not leaving much wood at the base of the neck... one decent shot at the end of the headstock, and the wood can crack and cave into your pickup. This was known to be an issue with some Decade basses. It’s a risk to consider.

I have a US 44-51 and it’s my favorite Lakland at the moment. It doesn’t need a 2nd pickup in my opinion. But, I will definitely toy with different split or stacked 51 P pickups, to get rid of the SC hum.

Here she is, before and after I double-side taped on a pickup cover and thumbrest that I made from maple.

They really should offer a Skyline single coil 51. Some of us know that the first P was the best P.

I have asked Brian about a Skyline single-coil. But no plans apparently.
Might be possible to get a Skyline and have it filled and routed for a SC, then refinished....most likely still come in under a US price?!

A US would be my preference, but I have my eye on a Serek too :P (good ‘ol Chicago basses!).

Morning lakland group!

I'll post a pic of my lakland early next week (4451 skyline.....have a set of nordstrand power blades in the mail )

I was wondering if anyone has/knows of a place that makes custom replacement parts?

I have a brown leather pickguard, would love to do:
-custom knobs
-a custom control plate (all wood and brown looks weird with the big fat silver metal plate...)

Any ideas...???
