Lakland Owners Group #69

It's a 4 string that someone has placed a tightly spaced 5 string bridge on, plugged/redrilled the headstock, and it looks like new veneers were placed on the headstock to cover the plug work. Nicely done, but I'd never trust it and couldn't stand the tight string spacing. The B and G are too close to the fretboard edge for me.

Yeah, I thought that after looking again.
Apart from the string spacing issue (which I guess is why he didn't use the Lakland bridge (or maybe they wouldn't sell him one)), wouldn't there be serious issues with string tension? That's a heck of a lot of strain on the neck, and on the join. I think Lakland themselves decided against a fiver hollowbody for that very reason.
I'd still be interested to hear how it sounds...

Yes, a Lakland 5er bridge is 19mm (like standard 4 string basses) and could never work on that bass.

And, yes the tension on the neck joint would be increased significantly. And, you're correct about Lakland deciding against a 5er HB due to tension on the hollow body design being too much.

That is sick!!! It may be time for me to liquidate some things and fund a build. The maple is looking better and better these days!

YES! I was thinking the same thing. Maple is looking awesom. Want a new USA 44-94. Love BEM, but that flame looks sooo good. Side note, what is diff. between Shoreline and USA Lakland. Have seen shorelines on Reverb.

Shoreline are made by ESP exclusively for the Japanese market. Unlike USA or Skyline basses, they don't go to Chicago for final checks. Basically two manufacturers making the same instrument in two different countries, who don't actually have anything to do with each other. ESP Laklands seem to be really good quality too, but once you include shipping and taxes I don't think there's any real price difference between a Shoreline and the full-fat USA models. USA models also come with a MUCH bigger range of options.
There's also now the ESP Skylines, which are made in Korea and use Duncan Design electronics: the MM-J configuration and the headstock shape are the only things they have in common with Lakland.

Speaking of which, I got my 44-64 back from also with a new 1.62 neck and abalone inlays and couldn't be happier. Awesome job by the shop!View attachment 3127908View attachment 3127906 View attachment 3127907
I would be too busy staring at the back of the neck (and probably drooling) to play it- that's a beauty!

And for all you Chi Sonic cats (not mine, fyi)

Wow! Two sweet basses. Hope you won't regret letting them go. Do you have GAS for something else? Inquiring bassists want to know
I bought another 55-94 already- it's blue, my favorite color, but otherwise same/similar specs. Just putting the BG5 up to see if it goes- no real reason to sell it, but I have so much stuff right now, it gets neglected.

Neither the bridge, knobs or colours look legit on this. Only thing I can think is a proof-of-concept model. Anybody know any history on a 5-string prototype?

Hmmmm...I've asked about that several times and was told it wouldn't / couldn't happen.... As such this is really odd

What year is in the invoice?

Am I the only one twitching about Lakland's bank info on the invoice? Damger! Danger!

I think it had to be there.. Looks like it was a wire payment....

I've had to supply the same data to clients for wire transfers.

Yes... It seems unsafe..... But my bank tells me it's ok... Not sure how.

I've been after one of those for some time... Even Carl would not build me one.... Not sure how this came to be.

The headstock is blank.... Kinda wierd

I wouldn't touch that for anything.... they modified a US HB in a questionable way and then Want more/almost the same as a new one? That's military grade hellnaw there.

As for routing info, Federal Reserve Bank Reg E covers electronic funds transfers (EFT) and basically requires that banks must have validated, written acknowledgment that the account holder authorizes the payment, and sets requirements for account holders to dispute charges (30 days? I don't remember... I only audited the 1's and 0's). Basically the intent is that routing and account info is and never was intended to be secret- think about checks (you still write one or 2 a year right?) it's the same info. If you set up a recurring charge with an ACH for a charity or gym membership that contract is your (the account holder's) permission for the entity's bank to automatically withdraw the pre-agreed funds.

Anyhoo... not a worry that they list it... common-ish practice.
