i did not, but have been using hi beams for many years without doing this and have never had an issue. I am a freak about new string tho too. I change my strings just about every month. My wife was just giving me poopie about it, saying she wished I took care of myself and got my haircut as often as I take care of my bass and change the strings haha.

Wow. In all my time with Hi Beams I have neither heard or experienced this. Interesting. I have found them annoyingly clanky when brand new.

My only .02 on the string retainer is that it’s properly adjusted. Down enough for sufficient pressure but not so far that the string is actually contacting the finish or wood. Should be able to slip paper or see light between the string and neck behind the nut. I have had a few that were marked up in that area from being too tight. But my latest was a bit loose and noisy.

Sorry 3bc, sounds like your luck finally ran out. I’d bet my favorite Lakland that if you replace those strings with another set that you “crimp before cut” as they say, your problem will be gone.

Here’s one video (there’s many) from DR and The Bass Hang that explains how they want you to do it. You can skip to the 50 second mark to get to the goods.

It’s not his tree. And my US 5ers always had a bit of rub or scars were the strings rubbed while passing under the retainer bar. It’s a non-issue as long as the break angle is sufficient to keep the string in the nut.

US Lakland 5ers have a very flat fretboard to headstock transition. My bar is barely held in, my screws are almost all the way out, and the strings still rub.

Had the scheff for a couple of days and I have to say that it’s one of the most unique sounding basses I’ve ever had. Panning between the pickups reveals several distinct personalities. Both pickups combines has some similarities to a ric. There’s a hard attack to the note that makes you wanna dig in harder. The neck pick up is nice and open sounding without being too boomy. It’s all pretty great.

I’m working on an MTD with spalt top that looks gorgeous! I think it’s the mental association with spalt and boutiques that makes it weird for some of us. I’ve went for over 2 decades looking at quilt maple topped 44/55-94s. In time my mind will open up to new things :-).
