I have a pile of basses; literaly 1 - 60'P, 3 -70's P's and a MIM P
I've really grown to like the 44-02 neck as well as the flexibility for a non P tone
So, perhaps just an unrealistic expectation on my that this thing can do everything great

The 44-01 has import pre and pups....the pre is not great....pups are fantastic sleepers. They will come alive with a better pre.

Sorry to keep posting on this but one last question.
Best Bass Gear has a Bart J pickup with this description:

These pickups are split coil hum-cancelling designs - think of them as a "P-Bass pair in box". These are wound to yield more "growl" from the Bridge pickup. They are very similar to Bartolini’s old 94J pickups, just ever so slightly brighter at the bridge. These have stronger lows and low mids than the typical "vintage" tone.

9 Jazz L/S (Long/Short) – 9J1 L/S, 59J1 L/S, 69J1 L/S, “4 String” size


Not that I'm anxious to spend money but if the Barts in this bass were not stock and were voiced for Lakland, maybe this 9J pup is a better match for a P tone?
This description was confirmed by Doug at Bartolini who got back to me very quickly; love great factory support!

The 94J may get you closer with your 44-02 neck pup solo's, but it will not be as close as the mk1 in the 44-01. The mk1 magnets are actually a true reverse P in a soapbar. This would not be the case with the 94J.

When I had a 44-02, I took the mid Freq up to 1100kHz, it's set to 500kHz by default. Cut the treble a little boost the mids and bass a little and blend towards the neck 25-50% and you'll get to P territory. Also, pick closer towards the neck.

...and FWIW, I usually always carried my 44-64 with me with my other Laklands. There really is no substitute for a P...try a 44-64 with Jazz neck i.e. Duck Dunn model if you haven't already. The necks are better than the 44-02 neck.

On another note...looking at the 44-64 PJ Custom Skylines and noticed that the white and black models have blocked and bound necks, but not the Red models...anyone know why?

I've got GAS and a green light from the wife. So, I'm between a 44-64, 72' Tele Custom a la Keith Richards, or a Fender Vibrolux Reissue. Ya, I know guitar stuff.

+10. Totally agree. First thing I did in my 44-01 was take out the stock pre and replace it with a custom Auder. Mk1’s did come alive but I did not stop there. Tried Big Singles and Jazz Bar pups by Nordstrand.
