Lakland Owners Group #69

I found those Alien Audio basses after we started the build. I like what they offer and the pickup placement is really close to what mine has. Mine is passive though. Do you use the preamps much?

The preamp is MONEY. It’s the biggest part of the sound. Mo West designed a monster circuit before he passed away. He left a treasure with this preamp.

If anyone is interested, I just listed my custom Lakland USA J-Sonic 4 in the classifieds last evening:

I love this bass, I can say with no exaggeration this is the most difficult it has ever been for me to list a bass for sale. I may eventually come to my senses... but I could really use the cash for some vet bills and other expenses at the moment so I’m going to see what happens for now.

Sick!!

Yup :)

For anyone that’s interested... GET A DUAL P!!! There’s no words to describe how much I enjoyed that bass last night! Forgive me if I’ve said this stuff before, cause I’ve talked about this build on several threads. But.... Carl describes it as a “Better J bass” cause the pickups are close to J bass location. But, my original plan was to have both pickups reversed w/ the bridge pickup in the Stingray location, and the neck pickup as close to the neck as possible, like where the Scheff pickup is. But, Carl and I didn’t want the two P pickups being too close to each other. So, the bridge pickup was moved back some, very close to where a 44-94 humbucker is. And the neck pickup couldn’t be reversed because I slap occasionally and the lower half would be in the way. The end result was magical! The neck pickup at 100%, bridge at 80% and tone 100% = perfection!!
I like that explanation of pup arrangement that you and Carl arrived at. Will you keep it passive? Sorry I missed your gig last night.

I wish you’d have made it! I was wondering if the bass sounded as good to the crowd, as it did on stage.

I should be keeping it passive, cause I don’t think it could sound any better.

That’s saying a lot! Good pups go a long way if you want to keep a bass passive. I like having the active option in addition to GOOD passive tone. Just like adding spice.

Go a couple of score pages back and you'll see my posts about the Birds Eye Maple 55-94 I picked up a while back. Its gorgeous, sounds incredible... but... I just don't play 5 strings any more. The only time I've taken it off the wall in the last 18 months was to adjust the action for seasonal changes. I love this bass, but I just can't justify keeping it in the stable if I don't play it. The ebony fretboard is just sublime... it's punchy and growly and needs to be played. Therefore... I've made the decision to list it... It's on Reverb now, I'll post here later tonight or tomorrow.... if you're interested, I'll give a price break for TB club and LOG buddies.

WOW! That is absolutely beautiful! That BE top would be my choice for a custom build as well as the ebony board. I’m not a 5er guy, but that in a 4, awesome. Will some part of you be sad to see such a beauty go?

Maybe? I don’t think so though. My tastes changed, not just in the 4 vs 5 but in aesthetics as well, even before I bought it. BEM has always been my favorite wood (I blame an 86 Ibanez RB) and in the years that I was playing churches and “fancy” gigs I was all about exotic woods and tops and natural finishes... now i’m more about solid colors or sunbursts, tort guards, and traditional looking stuff... this was a leftover of that earlier time, I thought the natural BEM would fit anywhere, and it does... just the 5 string doesn’t fit me anymore. So no, I’m not too sentimental about it, that’s why I take the glamour shots now :-)
