Lakland Owners Group #69

I picked up one of the last “exclusive” Sweetwater colors last week before these new purple ones showed up. It was a demo. Inquired on it and got a massive reduction added. So I couldn’t pass it up.

Is there a list of what colors were offered during what years for 44-01 basses?
I'm so tempted to add a 44-01 to the 44-02.

And yes, I'll admit to having thought about modifying the 44-02 to have a 44-01 neck pup.
Can't bring myself to do it as it's juts too good a bass, and not just this one. I've played two others and they all played great.
When I look at quality vs. weight vs. cost (assuming less than $1K) I think Lakland is the best choice with G&L and Fender as strong rivals.

QC seems to be pretty solid these days. Neck pocket is tight. Fret ends are polished well with no fret sprout. The nut is cut well. Finish work is good. Electronics are quiet with zero issues.

Thanks! I need to message the seller and ask if he did any setup on #93, cause I know he does stuff like that. This has to be the fastest buzz-free US that I’ve laid my hands on, and I’ve got to be approaching 25 or more, at this point. #11 is great, and has a (barely) more comfy neck, but it has some minor buzzing. Granted, I set my basses up to have some buzz, and typically file the nut slots down to where a zero fret would be. I do refrets, leveling, crowning, polishing, minor repairs, etc. But, I’ve yet to touch a Lakland fret. They’re so tiny that I’m dreading the day that I need to level/crown/polish any.

Btw, I filed the Carlo nut slots Friday before the show. Carl has his specs that he uses for setups. He’s very scientific and precise with his measurements. The Carlo felt like all the EBMM basses I’ve played, down at the 1st through 5th fret area. Someone refused to NOT talk to me while I was working. Women!!! And, I filed the G slot too deep. I will fix it someday with some bone dust and CA glue. For now, a folded piece of aluminum foil, under the string, works perfectly.

This is unacceptable for a $3,400 bass. I just emailed Lakland, asking that they fix it.

I got my bass back from Lakland today, and it’s perfect now. The issues were fixed, and it’s now exactly as I had hoped it would be.

But you haven't tried a 44-01 and there isn't a dealer for hundreds of miles...
OTOH, sometimes you've just got to have faith and I've learned never to sleep on a featherweight.
Look what is headed my way and I don't particularly like coffee table basses!

Initial impressions:
I love the feel and playability of the bass. I’m not a fan of the stock Lakland pickup though. It’s VERY hot, and a bit aggressive. I’ll probably end up swapping the pickup with either a Lindy Fralin (standard wind) or an Aguilar AG 4P-60 pickup. I love both of those pickups. I’m leaning towards the Fralin.

Good for you...have you picked out a new preamp yet? It's a simple up grade if you are handy with a soldering iron and can read a simple schematic. You can get the Bartolini US NTMB module for about $99 and the pots you need for another $20.
