Whatever, I can do it. I can also tell the difference in tone between thru-bridge and thru-body string attachment, as well as the difference in tone due to a poly finish vs a nitro finish...

this is the pickguard I had on my 55-02 from a few years ago. Wish I never sold this one. It's alittle different from the one that lakland offers direct.

I've had D'Addario Nickle XL's on my 55-14 since I've had it, and it has sounded good. But this weekend, I put DR Sunbeams on it, and wow!... I had chill bumps on my arms during my gig, because of how great that bass sounded. The tone was so rich, warm, and focused with those Sunbeams on it. I'm definitely keeping them on.

I've got a strange problem with my 55-02. I am getting strange modulation on the A string, especially when I use a pick. You can hear it very clearly, when you hit the note it immediately drops in output then comes back up. Kind of like a really bad compressor or one set poorly. I have changed strings, battery's even tried different settings on the internal Mid range DIP switches. I thought I was developing a problem with the preamp but it happens in passive mode also. And the A string is the only thing that is affected, all other strings behave normally. My bass is a 2008 made in Korea and is all stock.

Strange thing is a while back my Brother in Law had a low output problem on the A string of his 55-02, but his was just that a noticeable difference in the output on the A string. His bass was new and Lakland replaced his pups free of charge. Mine had no issue at all until recently. Now Lakland is not going to replace the pups on a 7 year old bass and Im not going to even think about asking them to.

I guess I'm wondering if anyone else has come across this problem and if they have a solution. I was thinking the nut or maybe the bridge possibly but I cant see anything wrong at either and as far as the nut goes, it happens on fretted notes as well.

Any ideas out there?

If you are the original owner contact them. Even if you are not, contact them. Leo or Brian should be able to at least point you in the right direction of what needs to be done to fix the issue at minimum. Their CS is top notch, and I have never known anyone to be turned away simply because a bass had some miles on it.

It's with all 55-02's when you attack it a certain way. It's the coils between the A and the D and it's jacks with the string. Lakland offers a replacement pickup that doesn't have that issue. I had the same problem.

That's very interesting ... is this the lakland-branded pickups ? Do we know what years were affected or another way of telling if any given bass is affected ? I noticed something like this on my 55-02 when I bought it second hand and put it down to old strings. I changed the strings soon after purchase (to flats) and haven't noticed it since.

The 55-02's that I've had this issue on were both Indo made with the Lakland pickups. One was a '10 and the other was '12. I put half rounds on one and the issue was still there but not as bad. I asked if the Bart's had the same issue and they said they have the same coil configuration as the Lakland pickups. If memory serves I talked to Brian at Lakland about this a few years back.

It because the pickups are split coil (to reducer/eliminate hum)...the "split" is right under the A string....I am not sure what they did in the "replacements" to fix the issue....unless they are not split (?)

Regardless...contact them....they will take care of you the best they can.

Hey everybody, just ordered my 3rd Lakland which is a black and maple 55-02. Very excited for it to arrive! My big concern is the massive neck. The only 5 string I have is a stingray 5 and sometimes I feel cramped after playing for a while (I can't tell if it's cause it's a 5 stringer and it's too big or if the string spacing is too skinny). Anyone had this experience? I want to love this bass!

I've heard this is true and the A string can sound quieter as a sacrifice.

My US 55-69 humbucker is dual coil instead of quad, which addresses the quiet A string but you do get a bit of hum in certain coil tap positions.

The string spacing and neck was one of the reasons I tried a Lakland to begin with. After that I just fell in love with the bass all around. As far as the neck width, I find it very comfortable when I found other 5 strings to be cramped as you say. Wonderful neck!

I sent an email to Leo he responded initially and asked if I was the original owner of the bass, to which I replied no and I haven't heard back from him since. Oh well I guess I'll give him a little more time and see if he gets back to me.

Any way seeing as the split is directly under the A string I wonder if lowering the string may help some. If it is a little closer to the magnetic field perhaps it can overcome the split somewhat. I might try that and see if there is any improvement. Perhaps even raise the pups a little too.
