it beats the hell out of Fenders model numbers, i.e., 0190102803.....no way to tell what this is.
Lakland is easy by comparison, 44-94= 4 string, 34" scale introduced in 1994.
55-02= 5 string, 35" scale, introduced in 2002
Thank you for the decoder. I like simple things like "P" or "Glaub" instead of 44-64. I can never remember the number of what I'm searching for.
While I'm here, I'm searching for a USA Lakland P bass, or Glaub or 44-64. What year did they stop stamping these as Glaubs? Anyone know the highest Glaub serial number? The Lakland serial number decoder sheet seems to stop at BG411 in 2009. But I've seen used ones with BG serial numbers higher than that. Truly, I have searched around to decipher this and could not figure it. In poking around I did see BG01 sell on TB not too long ago. That was cool. I had a hunter green BG and stupidly sold it. Now I wish to replace it. Are the new Classic USA 44-64's just as good? I appreciate all your expert help.

Yeah, the introduction of the USA Classic series (including the -14s) has made the lineup more confusing.
Still, it's much easier to sort through than Ibanez's 500 different models! And at least Lakland doesn't use the same name for both a brand and a model. *cough* Sterling *cough*
The 55-14’s have hipshot licensed tuners and skyline bridges as well, if we’re really getting specific
Wha?! I was of the understanding that they used US Hipshot ultras. I have no idea how you could tell the origin of the bridge but the early 55-14’s used USA tuners and not the licensed variants. When did that change?

Not really. It’s actually extremely descriptive, but you do need to know the code
1st number= number of strings
2nd number the scale length

4th and 5th are the models or the year the model was introduced

I really could not pass this one up due to the price.
It is a 2001 55-63 (Dual J).
It has a small ding on the black area near the upper horn and the bridge pickup has a bit of corrosion on the poles but nothing major.
It is super light (sub 9 lbs???) and the set up is very low and fast.
The previous owner put some side marker stickers on it but that was cured with a bit of go be gone and wood polish.
The neck is nicely aged and feels awesome.
The pickups are Fralins and they sound like great Fralins should.
I thought she may need a set up but NOPE...she feels great the way she is.

It's actually a bit more on the turquoise end...
I love trans blue... Have 2 trans blue basses (5507 and Scheff)... This one has a bit more green... But it's still leaning blue... And I love it
Whoa, very nice Doug! Funny, I always associate this type of trans-blue finish with Lakland's very early years, I didn't know they were still doing it in 2001.

I may have confused it by talking about both. First, the model numbers are mind-numbing. Then I was trying to date a Glaub serial number but the serial number Lakland decoder sheet ends at 2009. Did the Lakland world change in 2010 or something?
They stopped publishing serial numbers for US basses after 2010... With imports.. The first 2 digits are the year it was built.....
The US basses.. Not really... That is numeric...
The US basses are harder to decipher.
I really wish they published a new US serial number guide..
