Douglas, love you like a brother, but a Scheff don't sound much like a P bass, especially with that bridge pickup blended in. Scheff has a unique sound.
Ok OK...but much more like a P than a J...."beefier"...more rounded...does that make sense?

I actually sort of agree w/the p bass assessment. I mean, they do sound much more like a P than a J to be sure. Though ...yes they do have their own sound.
Agree totally, that’s what I thought when I played JJ’s had a 4-94 and his Carlo double P there to compare. I love the UNIQUE sound of the Scheff. Both pups up full, that’s my jam, and the bridge pup soloed, finger funk bliss, IMHO!

Finally found some time to tackle the pre replacement in the 55-01. I had picked up a Bartolini HR5.2AP/918 pre a while back but just wasn't sure I was gonna stick with this bass. Well, after the whole Reverb 55-94 debacle (funds are finally back, thankfully) and the uncertainty in future gigging, I decided to pull out the stock MK-1 pre and see for myself whether this one could breath a little life into the stock MK-1 pickups.
Took me a while to figure out what was what with the wiring as there are NO MK-1 wiring diagrams that I could find and the ubiquity of these pickups/pres in every other mid-level bass out there yielded a lot of contradictory information. Once I figured it out, the swap out went fairly quick and fairly smooth. The only major hiccup I had was a ground got wrapped in the output jack when I installed it which yielded no output when I first plugged it in. A quick inspection sorted it out and it's working flawlessly. And, true to the advice in this thread, the MK-1 pickups have a really nice warmth and growl to them. This pre provides a push/pull mid pot for 250Hz or 800Hz and i'm really enjoying the 800Hz for some nice punch.
I think I'll be letting this one hang around for a while.
