I agree... But the few times I've played lately it's been the upright.... Maybe it's the challenge!?
I have never played an upright. I hear it takes more physical effort than electric. True?
Yes... Holding your left arm up the way you need to takes a whole different muscle group and plucking takes a bit more effort....
If I play for an extended period of time or over several days I can get a sore shoulder and/or upper arm...
But is extremely fun!!!
Bought an MK Electrici Studio Upright to support my Italian friends as COVID hit them hard, and this is exactly my experience. Timbre is off the hook, but what a workout; insanely good for your ear training, but talk about having to slow down. Dang.
Decided I deserve a new toy. Been wanting to add a 44-64 custom PJ for a while now. Every week I get that B-stock email and get gas pains. Every now and again I check in with Brian to see if anything weighs even remotely close to 9 lbs (my 55-02 weight 8.8lbs). Balked on a couple really light ones before the pandemic because I really don’t need to spend the money. Ever since, everything they’ve been getting in weighs 10+ lbs. I saw the email this week and decided to check in with all the cool new stuff on the list. Same story. Nothing on the list even close to my weight requirement. But wait! Brian emails me later in the evening to tell me they just came across a CAR PJ weighing 9lbs 6oz with a barely noticeable paint blem. I was on the fence about the weight... and then he sent the pics. Decided it’s close enough to 9lbs. So... she’s paid for and in queue to ship. I’m pretty stoked, so here’s a couple of pics Brian sent. Should be a nice complement to my spalt 55-02. Guess this makes me a Lakland collector now! Happy weekend all!

My first Lakland was a used 2002 skyline CAR Glaub that I later converted to a PJ.
GREAT bass.. To this day..I regret selling it...

Thanks! This is the first time I’ve bought a bass without having played even a similar model somewhere anywhere. I had played a 55-02 at a shop once and I lusted for one for so many years before I came across my spalt on Sweetwater. I’ve never had a chance to play one their P or J models so I have no idea how their J neck even feels. I’m sure it’s gonna be great based on what I read here. I’ve been really gassing for a PJ and I just love what they’re doing with these custom models. The videos I’ve watched sound fantastic too. So now the wait for the brown truck begins!
