44-64 PJ owners... Has anyone swapped out the stock Lakland pickups for something else? Was it an improvement?
The P is very hot and great for rock, but the J pickup is kind of noisy and isn’t really wowing me. Compared to the bridge pickup in my ‘02 Fender J it’s rather lifeless solo. Surprising since it’s supposedly overwound. Been playing around a lot with pickup heights too.
So I’m thinking about Aguilar or Nordstrand with a humcanceling J. Curious what others have experienced.

Fralin PJ set is excellent. The stock set features a noiseless J which is also 5% overwound for balance.

I also like the Ulyate Tic Tac PJ's. Just a tiny bit more pop that a traditional P sound. FYI there is a set FS in the classifieds - I am not involved in the sale.

So the big Christmas Eve rehearsal tonight. Taking the Roscoe Classic 5 and the Lakland 55-94. Lakland will probably win out due to weight of bass plus 3 services back to back. But the boat anchor is a tone monster.
I'm playing tomorrow night at church for the first time since March....but no practice...the WL (band leader) has way too much going on.
All stuff we know pretty well...a mix of standard Christmas Hymns and a few more modern (a song the WL wrote a couple of years ago and a "Christmas Hallelujah" ...yes the Cohen song with Christmas lyrics)....but the order is sometime interesting...a verse then narration...2 verses...narration....instrumental...etc.
active 55-60 fretless will be the weapon of choice...thought about the electric upright but decided to do the fretless for ease etc (also - we will be in the balcony and pretty tight I'd guess...masks on for sure!).
A definite hollow body might be in my future for those acoustic style Christmas/Easter songs. My acoustic is nice, but different animal. The wife thinks I should get an upright double bass, I told her that is a different species, not just a different animal.
I've had both the full size HB and the HB-30, and I stuck with the latter. I'm having it painted ice blue, with a parchment pick guard on order. The long scale is a great bass, though I think the newer version with the Chi Sonics sounds better than the older one with Barts.

I need to start using my youtube for more than just watching clips, and post some recordings. I've got so much gear, I could post something new every day for quite a while! Ehhh… it would be easier to send it to @LowEndLobster and let him review it.
I didn't realize they stopped making the 34" hobos. There's a decent one for sale on Reverb for under 1K. It has a scratch along the bottom edge (where the strap button is) but it's in the black and probably easily repaired with automotive touch-up paint.
BTW- I use that paint to turn smaller chrome parts into black ones, like string retainers, pickup and pick guard screws, etc. Any auto part store will have it in their paint repair section.
Black GluBoost is easy to work with and gives stellar results!
Here’s a fix I did recently for a friend/customer. He paid me with some very nice scotch haha!
If only they made it in candy apple green, my Sadowsky would be ding free...
They sell pigment powder. But, I’m not sure anyone could colormatch candy apple green easily.
