What you are experiencing is pretty typical...
You can adjust the preamp to lower the volume there... But it's not recommended... It gets noisy...

Has anyone tried to replicate the knobs Lakland used on their basses originally. When I bought my 55-94 Lined Fretless I remembered how much nicer they are than the newer ones. Just curious
I thought lowering the output of the pre to match the passive volume would decrease noise, if anything???
Care to elaborate? What were they like? I like the ones on my 2017 Skyline. Knurled black metal domes.

My guess is that you have a Bob Glaub or Joe Osborne the earlier 55-94’s have a plastic knob. See below.The Lakland 55-94 below has their current smaller knobs.

My 1st year 4-94s have had the smaller knobs. My ‘99 55-95 has the bigger ones.
No... You have to turn the volume up which may increase noise ( or so Carl tells me).....I've never actually done it myself
I've been using NYXL's on mine, but in 45, 65, 80, 100 and 130T. I use the super longs, and my 55-94 is oder and has the Bart setup, so not quite apples to apples, but I'm happy with them. Although when I had this bass in for a setup and a few tweaks, Carl pointed out that the taper on the B string is designed to sit on the saddle, so thru-body stringing probably isn't the best.
It's funny you mention that, as one of the tweaks Carl did was swap out the knobs (some of them were pretty chewed up, not by me). They're different, I don't know if one is "better"- they're still rubber/plastic.
I also had Carl swap out the "vintage" truss rod nut for a hex wrench one, much quicker and easier. Blasphemy I'm sure to some purists, but easily reversed if needed.

This makes no sense. You're saying turn the preamp volume up?
His passive volume is less than his volume with the preamp engaged. Cure for that is to dial down the preamp output with a jeweler's screwdriver.

I am missing one old one for my '99 55-94, you can't get them anywhere. In the end the cheapest thing was to get the new ones from Lakland and have a friend bring them across the Atlantic when they visited.
(A wee while later they also went in the parts drawer as I upgraded the pre to an east uni pre.
Depends on the hum.... All active electronics will have a certain noise floor. Turn things down too much and this will be a comparatively louder compared to the signal... which you're then going to boost in the amp/pa ...
Oh yea! I am way curious as to how the uni pre worked out. When I had my 44-94 with Bart pre and pups, I adjusted pre gain about 50%. So with no boost on any bands of EQ, diff in level between passive and active was very close with very low noise, but that was ages ago!

For me it’s transformed it, with the original pickup I was struggling, the mid control seemed way too powerful, low end boom- tone suck ... and couldn’t find a setting that worked for all pickup configs.
The uni pre is wonderful - active blend, passive roll off, pick attack and I can tune the freq the bass and treble controls work on. The semi parametric mid is brilliant as I can find the setting that works for the pickup settings.
I can get a passable P style tone (75% neck, neck coil on HB, passive tone backed off, bass slightly cut and boost mids at lowest setting) different jazz tones and, well I almost bought a 1977 stingray but found tonally the Humbucker with pick attack on and no passive tone roll off got me 95% of the way there.
Honestly, I bought this 55-94 by accident, the East was a last gasp try this before selling it, I didn’t think I would ever play the bass as much as I do. Esp given it’s my first 5 string. The biggest problem is I don’t really need/want the B string!!
YES! I anticipated you saying that. I put an EAST PRE in a Sub Ray I bought and changed the pup and the East MM PRE with sweepable mids transformed that bass into something way more versatile. Have mentioned I would like to do the same to a 44-02 with unipre installed. I believe it would transform the basses versatility even further.
Well, the last 2 weeks I've sold my DJ5 and a Black/Maple 55-01, basically to make room to try and buy back my old vintage creme 55-01 (I miss it so!!). Hopefully that will happen in the next week or two.
So currently down to 'just' my US 44-94 (passive P/J), and my US 44-64 Classic.
Also been looking around for a black HB-30, but they're bloody rare over here in the UK, should have jumped when they first came out! I really want to string one with La Bella black tapewounds!
