Not sure if it’s the same manufacturer, but they still sell strings. Packaging is a lot more generic. Dan Lakin is using the art themed stuff in his ads again, I think I remember him saying that’s a friend who does those?

Ha! My purple Sadowsky 4 string will never leave me. But, a new custom 5 order was “unlocked” today with Lakland. So, more Lakland’s to gig!

I know that headstock ding, that's one I owned...twice ROFL. That's about $200-$300 more than I would pay for that bass.

I’m strongly considering changing the MK1 preamp in the 55-AJ. Will I need to get new knobs or are they universal? Leaning toward the Nordstrand 2-band with the passive tone control. I’m also considering the sadowsky which comes with knobs. Thanks.
Guess they're going for the "collectable" market? Bought one in 2006 for $1200....
Depends on the configuration of the preamp you're getting. It seems like your 55-AJ has four holes and you have a concentric pot. The knobs you have should fit in any preamp that has this configuration (3 single, 1 concentric). The only thing I'd double check is the shaft height of the concentric pot you're getting. Preamps like Audere and John East use solid shafts which are taller, but then again both include knobs that fit.
If you like your knobs wait until you get the new pre to test. Places like BestBassGear can advise you on which knobs to get in case you decide to try something else.
Thanks. My plan is to keep the same knob config by going with Vol-Blend-passive tone-bass/treble stack. The nordstrand appeals the most. I’ve seen a lot of recommendations for the Audere. I like what I’ve heard of the Audere classic but the eq points seem odd on spec. I emailed them and he said they can include a passive tone on the classic. I am not a knob turner and would just go passive if it weren’t for the 4th hole. Not sure I want to do two vol and two tone. So I figure something simple and transparent when flat with a functioning tone control and the added option of some boost a la sadowsky.
The MK1 isn’t horrible but it does have its own character. Considering Lakland pickups tend to be darker and mid heavy the MK1 really spikes the upper treble and bottom. Treble cuts too broad too quickly. A lot of bottom too. I cut the treble and bass a slight hair and boost the mid up a slight hair to get it to sound more balanced. Meh. I’m pretty sure swapping this thing out will transform this into a killer bass.
Unrelated, but I do notice the difference the J body makes in the overall reach of the 55 neck. Up against my 55-02 it’s fully more than an inch further out. Makes the 02 seem small and comfy in comparison. Reinforces how great that body shape is. Truly two different animals. I could see how an upgraded 01 could be perfect. (time to hide my wallet!)

Speaking of knobs. I'm thinking of replacing the OG ones on my Lakland 55-02 Deluxe. Such a nice bass with the cheapest looking knobs on it. I was thinking all Black Powder coated knobs but would love to see what others have changed too.

Agreed on the reach with the Jazz body. I owned a 55-60 for about a year and a half. On paper it should have been the perfect bass for me. In the end though it just wasn't as comfortable as my 55-94. Even my standard Fenders feel a bit extra long compared to it. It really is a well designed body.
Here's my 55-94 with John East chrome knobs. I'm thinking of getting some Sadowsky stype knobs for it.

Well, it's been about a month. Stipulated: My general attitude toward the instrument is that it is a tool. I am learning that having a really good tool can, in fact, improve the player. There have been more than a few problems I thought were because of my technical limitations that seem to have cured themselves. Just sayin'
I switched to Sadowsky style knobs. They just work for me.
So, dunno whether it's appropriate for this group or no (I appeal to mods to remove if not, my intentions are good), but here's a video of our church service this morning where you can hear the DJ4 and the 55-02 fretless really well. One song I used harmonics with a JHS compressor and chorus.
It's a small church with amateur technicians, so the mix isn't great and neither is the musicianship (I don't know who the cahon player is; not sure it's really his instrument...), but the bass comes through well.

I did some looking around and I'm going to try these in place of the originals that are seen here on my bass and see how they work out. I know things may seem good until actually in place.
